Which subwoofer with my setup?

Hi,

Because I'm in an apartment and that I respect my neighborhoods I removed the cheap noname 150$ subwoofer from my setup and gave it to family.
In 3 months I'll be in a house and I'm starting thinking about what kind of subwoofer I'll need with my current setup.

Here is the current setup :

Floor : Athena AS-F2
Center : Athena AS-C1
Surround : Polk R150
Receiver : Sony STR-DH800

HomeTheatre will be in a finish but open basement. I can get exact dimension if needed. Floor is ceramic tiles.

I'm a a movie listener only, no music.
Budget is 500$ max.

Hope there is enough info!

Thanks,

SVS PB-1000 ($499, shipped)

Dimension will definitely help, and I highly recommend some investment on some area rugs. Tile and accoustics don't mix well smile.gif

Room size is 14x20
Ceramic floor is brand new so can't change it frown.gif Maybe a medium size carpet in the middle of the room?

You can buy SVS in Canada.

+1 for the SVS. Everything they make performs well and is built like a tank.

SVS would be better then equal price klipsch subwoofer?
IMO, yes; and especially up here in Canada, where we don't get the kind of deals (prices, free shipping) that they get in the States.

SVS makes great subs. I've owned a PB10-NSD (the unofficial predecessor of the PB-1000) and a PB12-NSD and both were solid and impressive performers. cool.gif

Svs...for sure...I also had the pb10nsd and it was a very good proformer...IMHO....you'll have a difficult time finding a better sub at that price....Canada. Fwiw...my first set up was Athena as-b1 & b2 as-c1 with a crappy as-p300 the Svs absolutely destroyed it.. You have other options for ID....as some might suggest but Svs is bulletproof and easy to resell...if you wanna go bigger or just want more bass down the road.

Yes, a carpet will help with the acoustics along with drapes, pillows, etc.

I also agree with SVS in Canada, other competitors cost too much to ship.

Isn't it an overkill subwoofer for a cheap setup like mine? ( 500$ floors, 400$ amp, 150$ surround )

So do you want an inferior subwoofer for the same price wink.gif, or have you decided to slash your budget? In my view, sub-bass is kind of its own thing--you can definitely benefit from having a great subwoofer even if your other speakers are unremarkable. Come to think of it, though, it doesn't really work in reverse, as you wouldn't want an inferior subwoofer to bring down the system performance of great speakers. I'll have to ponder this asymmetry, but nevertheless you'll enjoy having a nice subwoofer.

If what you stated in your opening post is accurate....the single most biggest improvement one can make for HT use is having a good sub....I know with shipping and taxes you'll be looking ~$650.00 cdn....but you won't regret it once you actually hear a real sub for the first time JMO.Heck I'd even say go bigger because good bass can become addictive...biggrin.gif

Those two last posts just hurt my wallet wink.gif
I'll go with that sub!

@Billy In fact I'm bypassing our Quebec taxe, so it's only 8% + 40$ shipping. Not that bad.

Now let's just hope girlfriend will approve confused.gif

Thanks!

Ah yes, the old beg forgiveness versus ask permission dilemma. You have to ask yourself, in earnest, "What kind of man am I?"

I kid. We're really bad here, aren't we? wink.gif Good luck with that.

Just got my GF approval! Told her I wanted a 1000$ subwoofer for our future HT...played the hurt little boy...then I said we'd go with the 500$ model then.
Took 5 seconds for her to ask me : you wanted that 500$ model in the beginning right?

So then you told her what you want eventually is two of the $500 ones, right wink.gif

Does your GF like action movies? See if you can find one or two 4 to 5 star movies from this list she would like to show off your new sub: The New Master List of BASS in Movies with Frequency Charts

Cool list! One thing is sure, the complete LOTR trilogy is gonna bang those house's walls. I've passed the BD trilogy, telling myself that i'm only gonna listen to them when i'll have my HT. I think everyone here will approve smile.gif
