With only frame dimming, you need to see what the shadow detail looks like when there is something else bright on the screen
. Otherwise, things like a basketball game will have the shadows all squashed to black because the frame dimming cannot engage (because it would squash the bright sections).
Don't get me wrong, frame dimming is a big win over no-frame dimming, particularly for movies, because for less than bright scenes you'll get the shades of gray spread from the LCD's "black" to the brightest section of that scene. But if there's something bright, like the white border around the score, etc., then the dimming cannot engage and you're left with the native
LCD gradations, which are important to know for the R550.
