Verify something. If your receiver's speakers are producing the sound (<---note), Are you connecting like this?
#1: Source ---(HDMI)---> Receiver ---(HDMI)---> TV
(where the receiver is stripping out the sound and playing it immediately on receipt from the source)
#2: Source ---(audio in any format)---> Receiver
while simultaneously Source---(HDMI)---> TV
(where the receiver is getting the audio directly and the TV is getting the video directly)
#3: Source ---(HDMI)---> Receiver ---(HDMI)---> TV ---(HDMI/ARC or Analog L/R audio or digital/optical)---> Receiver
If it's #1 or #2, then lip sync issues are very common as the sound is coming out immediately and the TV is forced to trail behind because of video processing. If it's #3, then it's unusual because the TV itself is dictating that the sound comes out delayed to the end of processing.
Of the 3 possible audio outs from the TV (ARC, analog L/R, optical), stormcrow is the first I've heard of this problem (with optical). I wonder if there's an S/PDIF buffering/processing going on here?
By the way....FWIW, keep an eye on the content source. In my case when I test the TV via it's own speakers driven by a BDP running a sound test (in this case, from Disney WOW), the sync is dead on. However, FIOS has periodically been throwing content at my TV that is horribly out of sync. Not always.
And it is unaffected by driving my receiver via analog L/R out from the TV. I will be experimenting with optical soon.
Thanks for the reply. It's #1. HDMI from source (htpc & ps3) to receiver. My pio receiver has 3 HDMI inputs. Output from receiver via HDMI to tv. I do not use the tv for sound. The receiver is accepting bitstream source from ps3 & computer and processing dolby THD/DTSMA/DD5.1/DTS, etc.
It seems that the tv is slow to process the video (the sound appears first). There is no "adjustable" video processing I can control on the receiver, and like I mentioned before, I had zero sync issues before. I must admit, I have been eyeballing the Onkyo 818 for some time now and am almost delighted by this opportunity to point fingers at my pio avr, but of course, I don't want to drop $700 and still have problems if this is all due to the tv.
Although, all signs point to the tv. I have been using the LOTR extended BR on the ps3 to audition the sync. The sync is off big time with this. I popped in Harry potter BR in ps3 and the sound is only off by a little. ......LOTR is DTS MA, HP is DD 5.1.
I do have 2 more (PITA) troubleshooting options at my disposal. I just bought a yammy 673 for upstairs. I could try that downstairs where all these probs are happening. Or perhaps an easier option, bring the old sony downstairs and see if this is happening on that. (Which it wasn't before).
Here is my big question: let's assume I bring the old sony 40" back downstairs and the sync is perfect. The we know it's the new sony 60"550a. What now?
