Hard to see it in this pic. The TV in store had a big blob in the middle too.

^Can you post the version before you drew the lines in as well?  Both are needed.  I need the before pic to clearly see the transitions.  It's possible that you're not seeing the same blobs that a few of us have had.

Are those horizontal bands just a beat frequency against the camera sensor?  If not, that's the worst DSE I've ever seen in my life.

The horizontal bands are just from my cell phone camera

Im new to this thread. Can someone just give me a brief summary of known issues, if any, with the 60r550a? Thank you.

Plus you don't even know if they will have the Sony at a BF price. Even if everything goes your way you still may be looking a long delivery window. They won't let you pick it up. They insist on delivering it at like $69 or more depending on how far they have to drive. You'll also miss out on some cool things to watch on that Thanksgiving week, like a parade and football etc.

Or, give it a shot and call Amazon and try a PM.

I did and got delivery free, didn't have to hassle with the store....parking, crowds, finding a sales rep...wondering if they sold out, etc.

One thing though about Amazon delivery. They don't have it standardized. My experience. CEVA sends two guys and are prepared to remove from the box and lift it onto the stand for me, etc.

This last swap, Amazon had given to Pilot. They email saying they will not do anything but take to the room of choice and plug it in. Would just leave 70" TV on the floor where it can be plugged in to test. I called and they didn't even show as a swap out. Said, if so, I would need to take down and box up the old one! (CEVA did all this for me.)

If someone already has help to do this, or will be wall mounting. (Don't think CEVA would assist putting TV onto existing wall mount?) The experience would be equal between these delivery companies. Just a shame though, that Amazon leaves it so the customer doesn't get the same level experience every time.

Also, after this last delivery got all messed up and delayed almost a week...Amazon extended my return window to 60 days, gave me $300 in credit. ($150 refund and $150 off items sold by Amazon.)

In the end I got this for $1399. Not to mention 1yr free on my existing NF and Amazon card CB. So, I just bought the Costco Square Trade warranty.

P.S. This TV does have the same issue of the Blue Ghosting, LLE, etc. But, is somewhat better with the backlight issues.

Yes, those are the blobs.

---> Return it immediately. <---

My replacement 60" does not have that at all.  Ignore the Sony sales staff, and use Amazon from now on.

Yes I plan going to the store again sometime today. The staff on the floor literally won't do anything. I have to speak directly to a manager.

I live in Canada so can't order from Amazon. Was wondering if calling Sony directly would get me anywhere? Got the TV for a good price so would rather exchange it than just get a refund but doesn't sound like the store wants to do it.

Good luck, let me know what they say.

Seems to me I keep seeing Canadians having trouble buying TVs.  Why is this?

It's their metric system. Our TVs are in inches and they're trying to cram centimeters in there... biggrin.gif

I don't know. The sales person I bought the TV from was willing to do the exchange today but the floor manager wouldn't allow it because he says all of the R550As have this blob issue. Bunch of dopes at the Eaton Centre's Sony Store.

Going to get a Sony technician to come look at it this week.

that right,The first thing I noticed was active vs. passive 3D. Your call as to which you prefer. thanks

Simulview Glasses for this TV (link below)

I haven't seen anyone mention these. A little confused - Sony is selling passive simulview glasses that they claim are compatible with the r550a. I don't have them, but when I tried to turn on Simulview in Kill Zone 3,it said "No simulview display detected."
Obviously I can't see it without the right glasses, but shouldn't it be able to display it in Simulview?

Am I missing something here? Or is Sony selling these with the intention of some software update? http://oduct_cross_sell%26pfmvalue%3D27-TDG500P

They say you must have it delivered, but a lot of people have reported that they drove it home. I for one woul rather pay a few extra bucks for white glove delivery. have them deliver it and carry it up my stairs and plug it in. I can then check real wuick for dead pixels or for blobs.

Say no all sony r550a do not have this issue.
You have 3 other friends with this tv and one 1 had this probably. After he exchanged it, he got a set without the white blob

It's infuriating that sales people seem to think that it's "ok" to hand out information like this.  That is just nonsense.  MY replacement 60" was blob-free.  And hear me carefully on this.  There. Is. No. Such. Thing. As. Blobs. Being. Normal.  Sorry, it is just a vastly different effect than DSE or even as a clear spot in a DSE ridden screen, it's pronounced even when still and sharply outined when panning, and no where in their literature or sample images does it show it or say that you should have to put up with this.

Forget the exchange.  Will they allow it to be returned?  This is getting me angrier the more I read it.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I did a search already and still couldn't find the answer. My wife uses a website to do a workout. She wants to be able to get this on the TV. I use the browser and get to the website she wants but when I hit the video it does not play. Just a black box where the video should be playing. Anyone have any ideas on this? Does the built in browser not play video? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sad for us consumers, is when those in the retail channel decide, a defect so common = Normal wink.gif

So, the manufacturer doesn't bare the full brunt of producing product with various defects.

Yes, many are saying don't expect too much from Sony's lower end. But, we do deserve a level of quality and consistency.

Through exchanges, returns for refunds and service calls, maybe we end up with better products at the end of the day?

There's been a lot of discussion about the lose-lose race-to-the-bottom scenario plaguing the TV industry.  It's not clear to me that there will ever be anything but corner cutting, and a general tightening of return policies in the future.

This is what makes purchasing from Amazon (and folks with similar return policies) so important in the US.  I'm sorry that Canada is so TV unfriendly.  Sort of reminds me of some of the frustrated complaints from the folks in Australia.

The video is probably flash based which is not supported by the TV's internet browser, only some HTML 5 videos will play.

"Best Buy - Canada" has sony TVs, including that one.  I'm betting their return policy is better, but up there, who knows.  It's so cold that it makes everyone cranky.  :)

Anyone have any pics of their setups boasting the Sonys being discussed here?

This is why buying a TV at Coscto is a godsend, its so easy to return/exchange stuff with them. Memberships do have benefits at times, not to mention 2 years factory warranty out of the box and for $60-$100 extra, you can get another 3 years with Squaretrade

Hah don't worry about it.

I can return it - not an issue. I bought it for a good price so would like to just exchange and will have a technician look at it. I still have a few weeks to get my money back :)

Strange/unfortunate that the lesson learned here is never to buy from a Sony store though. Especially the one in Toronto at the Eaton Centre!

^Well, you'll return it (I hope), and they'll just turn around and sell it to the next guy under the broken premise that "it's normal for that panel".  And then they'll be on this thread asking what to do.

We just moved in and yes, the place is a mess. Need to finish covering the wires in the back.

I don't know guys. Had a long session of GTA last night and the blob on my set has kinda got me bummed. It's about 6 inches in diameter and its off to the left center of the screen. You can only see it when the screen displays a black image. I just don't know if it is worth all the repacking and moving a 60" by myself to return.
