If you use the analog audio outputs, and set the TV audio to "variable", the TV remote will control the volume of the external sound gear.

Their is a setting within the soundbar to set a default input. its set to optical by default. Once I changed it to TV(HDMI) everything worked with perfect.

If you have some cellphones near the TV, the cellphone can cause distortion in the picture; also buzzing in the sound sometimes.

Keep cellphones at least 10 feet away.

So, I agree that BR should go direct to receiver if possible, due to this.

I wish there was a workaround to avoid it. I always hope an update will fix the issue. But, likely a license thing they don't want to pay for?

If all is set right and playing 5.1 DD, it should not be 2 channel. Had an old Samsung that did this. But, this Sony will pass the 5.1.

Thanks. I fixed it. I made an error in setting the sound to pcm instead of auto. It turns out reading the manual that pcm is only 2 channels, and auto is surround. Have not tried dts yet.

Hi members I need help. I have bought a new KDL-70R550A TV and I have a Denon AVR-591 amp. I am having a problem getting the volume from the Denon to show up on the Sony KDL. Currently I have My DISH, PS3 and PC HDMI cable input-ed in to the Denon and 1 HDMI cable output to the HDMI 1 ARC. I have HDMI control on in the Denon menu and also I have the Volume Display on and showing on the bottom of the screen selected. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Currently I am able to get all my sound from the Denon when I play a game or watch from the dish receiver or play a movie from my PC, because the Denon changes the source but the HDMI selection on the TV never changes. I have also set the TV to Audio System instead of TV speakers. But i can not see my volume bar at all.

Problem # 2

I like the Media DLNA option on this TV. I would like to be able to output the DLNA media audio to the Denon and not from the TV speakers. How can I do that. If some oe could please help me I would be thankful.

One additional Question: I have used a calibration setting someone had posted on Amazon back in June of 2013. If someone has better calibration settings they can share a link with me or info that would be helpful.

Hope to hear back soon. Once again thank you for your support and help.

FYI I contacted Sony via their eSupport portal and inquired about the latest 5.408.xxx firmware update, the response I received was that this update is exactly the same as the previous v5.350 from 11/2013. Seems like a rather strange response, but that's what I was told.

I do not have a denon system, but I think you can either use HDMI ARC from the tv to the denon or use an optical cable to pass audio to the denon system to pass the tv sound to the receiver.

You probably also want to use the Denon output HDMI to Sony HDMI 2 or 3 to pass video.

That's pretty awesome service.

I'm sorry, but can you check the name on that TV? I'm thinking it's "Sonny" and the customer service you spoke to was "Sonny Service". I refuse to believe you got any satisfaction from Sony. They make Verizon customer service look downright competent!

Ok.

Now

this

is

WEIRD

For some reason recently, the LLE issues seems to have diminished a lot on my 60R550A.

Is there a firmware release that changed anything?

I'm willing to believe it's a weird fluke in my observations and that it'll resurface.  But anyone else suffering with the "Lavender Lip Effect", please double check.

hey guys need ur help big time! My 60R550 has got a greyish spot on the left side towards the mid section. Its too tiny to be taken in a pic but irritating like hell! The Sony guys are equally puzzled and haven't done anything about it.I fear it may grow with time and absolutely hate it! Any suggestions as to what can be done and how can I convince the Sony guys to change my set!

I just picked up a 70" model from Sam's Club. I saw some posts about people getting a free year of Netflix with the tv purchase? Is this deal still going on? Just tried signing up for the trial and turns out its 30 days and I have to still enter my credit card info. Did I miss out?

Also, I saw the google doc with all the great user settings. Which seem to be most popular around here for general cable viewing?

Thanks guys

(?)  You can take a close-up shot and get even subpixels clearly captured by camera and this must be much larger than that.  Do you mean instead that it's too faint to be caught on camera?

Not in Canada:mad:
In US, you can call Sony and ask for a code (according to some previous posts here)

Hello all,

I am super stoked to have just purchased the display model kdl60r520a from Costco for just $985.  They are clearing their inventory of them right now and if you can find a Costco that still has some their display model is likely going to be on sale soon.  One by my house had the 70" model for $1500, I called back the day after I saw it and it was gone, the Costo by my work is where I purchased mine and a guy their told me after they sell 2 more of the 70" model that display will be for sale as well.

Anyway, it is only a day old so far but I am loving it!

If you just bought it then yeah you just missed on the free Netflix. But now it's just a 48 value. Last year when I got my TV I only got 6 months since I purchased in November. IIRC, they changed from 1 year to 6 months of free Netflix towards the end of the year.

Getting the 70" at Costco current price is a much better deal. biggrin.gif

Yes it's faint but sort of still obscures the picture. Is it due to bleeding leds? Has anyone else on the forum encountered anything similar?

Not enough information yet: There's no way to address what you're seeing until you get a picture of it or describe it better.  Are you sure you can't capture it on camera?

Anyone notice network speed is very slow on this set? I have the KDL60R550A and tried both wired and wireless connections. Wired is preferred since I should get more bandwidth. If I plug the ethernet cable into my laptop, speedtest shows close to 60mb connection. When plugged into the TV, Screen and Network test app only shows 17mb. I was researching due to lip-sync issues with Netflix 3d content. Other than the occasional buffering on netflix (also happens on my other Sony set - XBR9), picture quality from Netflix is great - "SuperHD" shows in display so my ISP (Comcast) must be ok with the new Netflix streaming methods. I know 3d needs more bandwidth, but even with the reduced speed noted on the set, it is within their recommended speed for viewing. I am more curious why the R550a reduces my bandwidth so much.

Yes, the TV receives a slower bandwidth, but 17mb is plenty for streaming netflix. I think min speed for 3D is 6mbps for high quality 3D it's 12mbps.

My Cox is like 28mb and I also get 17mb on the bandwidth test on the TV. I stream in superhd and have not received any lip-sync issues with the 3d content I've watched.

https://support.netflix.com/en/node/8739

I am curious if it's the TV that is preventing the bandwidth download cap or the Sony application doing the testing that is caping it off at 17mb or not displaying it correctly.

Hello all,

I have just purchased the KDL50R550a and are having an issue getting a picture from my STB.

I have 3 set top boxes that i mainly use for recording programs on different TV's, they all work perfectly on my other TV's but i cannot get a picture from them to

my new KDL50R550a!!!  I have tried all troubleshooting steps to no avail using different HDMI cables etc, My BR player and Android stick connected through HDMI

all work without issues. All set top boxes work when connected to my older Sony KDL40W5500. The only thing i can think of is it maybe a HDMI handshake problem

but i'm not sure and if that was the case why on this TV and not the others!

If anyone has has this problem and found a solution i would appreciate some help.

Apart from the above issues i like the TV, i did return the first one i got due to bad backlight bleed in lower left hand corner, the new one has it but not to the extent the first one did. The only gripes i have is the slow navigation through EPG and the fact it's supposed to be 50" but only measures 49.5" so feel robbed of 1/2" screen real estate, people don't worry too much about it but if they advertise 50" it should be 50" no less, i have another 50" that is exactly 50" as advertised and i can see a difference in size compared

to the Sony.

I believe the phrase they use in all advertising is 50-inch "class", which probably means anything from 48 to 52 inches.

I purchased my 60R550a (serial number 6xxxxx) back in June ‘13 and immediately noticed a "blob" measuring roughly 17" by 8" located in the middle of my screen. Tends to be more noticeable on white and light colored backgrounds. Knowing the TV came with a one-year warranty, I didn't experience a sense of urgency to call and get this resolved. Perhaps the hesitation came from the anticipation of having to call and deal with customer service and not knowing how well they would take care of me. I called Sony customer service and described the issue as a slight discoloration permanently fixed in a certain area of the screen.

After stepping through some meaningful troubleshooting (i.e., removing the plug from a surge protector and plugging it directly into the wall…because THAT’S what would cause something like this :-^) they offered to send me a recertified TV “comparable to the same model” and a two year warranty. I accepted.

Within a week, the replacement came via CEVA and ‘white glove’ service. They installed the replacement TV, packed up the old TV, then waited for me to inspect the replacement TV. Unfortunately, the replacement TV had the same issue…but five times over! It looked like there was a turkey on my TV. There were five “blobs” the same size as my original “blob” but in turkey tail formation. I could not accept that. They unpacked my original TV and repacked the replacement and I signed the “refusal of delivery” notice.

Sony called not more than an hour later to confirm the situation. They are sending another replacement TV within the next week. We’ll try this again. I’m not sure how many times we’ll need to go through this before they try a different strategy but I’m willing to repeat the process until I receive an acceptable replacement.

That’s the story and current status of my TV containing a ‘blob’.

UPDATE: Sony sent a replacement 60R550a (serial number 6xxxxx) earlier this week. I don't see "blobs" on the new screen. Everything looks great. Thus far I'm pleased with my new TV and the 2 year warranty that comes with it. I still have a little testing to do to see that all inputs work and the picture is consistent all around but so far so good. Interestingly enough, the calibration settings used on the last TV don't look so hot on this new TV-the picture seems darker. I'll have to check out the calibration settings xls and see if one of those suit me better.

Outside of having to go through this at all, I'm pleased with the outcome and my experience with Sony support.

I believer there is a trick reported somewhere in this thread about turning your tv to hdmi input with device on. While it's on unplug the tv power then unplug the hdmi cord. Turn off device. Power tv on and plug in hdmi cord .

I have the 70R550A and in the left corner there is a bright white spot that only is noticeable on white scenes or lighter colored scenes it is about 3 inches from the bottom and 3 inches in from the left..I bought the set in July 2013 and the build on the set is a June 2013 build..now I spoke to my local Sony store and they are going to exchange it for a new one on Tuesday ..My question..Is this a know problem with these sets?

Update: The replacement model that I got from Sony in Dec with a build date of Sept 2013 has the exact same problem almost in the exact same spot..Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I would like to maybe get a refund or credit and try my luck with a 2014 model instead..it seems to me that it could be a design flaw and that getting another 70R550A could have the same problems again
post #3746 of 3974

Thanks for the info Bowlopho, i will try what you suggest on weekend and hopefully sort out my STB connection dilemmas.

Thanks for explaining that Harry, i didn't realize there was such a thing as 50-inch class for TV's, think i will be taking tape measure to store next time i buy a TV, i can live with a TV being 1/2 inch under it's advertised size but 2 inches would be a bit much!

I tried, but need your help.
I was watching an old movie (High Noon), and I was not able to watch it in 4:3 format. my 550A is stuck in wide mode.
How do I change it to 4:3?
I am using the Sony 1110(?) BD player, and I cannot find any button to click to watch 4:3.
TIA for your help.

OK. I found out that I have to set up my BD player to display 4:3.
Thezse smart "stuff" can mean trouble for the un-initiated.
