.

2) with one NAS you should be fine, for me it is not obvious which folder is on which NAS box - there may be a way of checking but I have been rushing around just checking what I can get to run and how well:)
4) you could be correct about the Mede8er but I haven't played with their Jukebox and they have a major change on release today, so it might have improved past some of the forum complaints.
I use Zappiti on my Dunes for jukebox and control mainly through the IPAD and Dune app's (I tend to put the LAN attached Dunes in draws out of sight), but the 303D does allow you to set a favourite folder for power up, and if you set that as the_Zappiti folder then you get the jukebox at startup on the Dune screen.

Is there somewhere I can get a quick primer on what the difference is and where the issues lie with some of the common problems you guys are talking about? I don't really know what most of these are...but am in the market for a Dune/popcorn hour/ or Mede8er. At the ~under $600 price point of these devices I dont really care which I get...just need the most full featured.

Forced subs vs separate subs vs hardcoded subs

Seamless branching titles - what titles are these and what is causing the issue? Does this affect both this new 3d Dune and Mede8er 600?

FYI pretty much all of my movies are ripped to full 1:1 Blu Ray ISO's or BMDV folders. I am coming from an Oppo 93, which is what I use for all playback. I have not been used to dealing with these issues.

I can take this question somewhere else... just need to know where to look for a primer.

Thanks!

Seamless branch would be many of the Disney animated movies. Forced subs would be all new players (b/c they use BD Lite). If you only care about Blu ray 2D playback (not Bluy ray 3D) then I would recommend the older Dunes (Smart series) as they have full BD support.

You can check my reviews on the TV303d, PCH A400, and Mede8er on my blog (link below). Out of the 3 I would only recommend the Mede8er or Dune if you are streaming

I'm tempted to get an old Dune Smart and combine it with a 3d blu ray player, but at the same time, I'd like to only need 1 device. Maybe I'll go with one of these boxes. Maybe i'll try an HTPC. I hate this decision.

OK thanks... heading over to read your reviews now.

SO, when people talk about these workarounds for forced subtitles and making a .srt file.... that is something some of the ripping software can do? (I have only used Anydvdhd). And then you just take this file and put it in the folder with your ISO file?

Also, since I have never been concerned with my player playing menus... for BD lite... do I have to do something specific to make that work when I create a rip? I notice anydvdhd has options for this, but I have paid no attention to what happens if I click one.

If I went with an older Dune... that gets around both the subtitles, the menus, and the seamless branching issues?

OH - and is the DUNE the only one with DLNA support? Seems this could at some point interface with the DLNA project for the Hdhomerun prime to allow channel selection/guide/ PVR control for Cablecard?

Thanks again!

As far as srt, honestly I refuse to spend any additional time trying to add forced subs, so can't really help on that one.

As far as the rips, I use AnyDVD + Clown_BD and make main movie only rips (only works for 2D, not 3D Blu rays). This gives me just the main movie, and removes the seamless branch

The older Dunes (such as the Smart series) gets around all the issues, which is why they are still the main players in my house

Never use DLNA so can't really comment, but I think all players have some sort of DLNA support

How are you guys getting Zappiti to auto run on the Dune 303D? I have added the Zappiti folder I created for export to my Favorites and can run Zappiti through there, but I swear I read somewhere you can have Zappiti be the first thing that loads when you turn the 303D on. Thanks.

Also, how do you get back to the original Dune load up screen again? Thanks.
Highlight zappiti in favourites, pop up button, launch on power up
post #69 of 1165
Return by pressing return button..

Thanks for the good replies. One other question, how are all of your playing 3D Blu ray rips on this Dune? For all my 2D Blu ray rips, I have been using MakeMKV and using mkv containers. I also know there is a problem with this Dune and playing 3D Blu rays in mvc mkv format. So how are you all doing it then? Thanks.

Anydvd or dvdfab as folder/iso rips

I'm moving out from HTPC solution to media player. There's lot of hassle on configuration and the latest WinDVD and TMT5/6 is Cinavia infected so no way to stream 3D ISO/3D MKV from network. Also another problem with HTPC is due to some display having problem on black level in RGB output and there is a lot of driver tweaking needed to get it right.

Solidly deciding between the 303D and one of the older smart + my PS3 or an external BR player for 3D. Was the firmware ever updated on the older units to allow automatic loading in a jukebox?

No, not yet. I've heard no specific time frame, just an expectation that it is "coming soon."

Any news of a firmware update to address the streaming of mvc mkv for 3D Blu ray on the TV 303D? Just curious as I love MakeMKV and how easy it is to use. Thanks.

But for TV303D, HD Audio is not advertised, although many have confirmed that it works fine. Awkward.

So, there is an audio difference between this model and the base 3d? The base has better audio capability with the same chipset in it? Can someone please confirm this.

Same chipset, same firmware

I ended up getting the Dune and I'm glad. They finally worked out that 11MB/sec cap they always had on their old players. I can now get 54MB/sec in transfer speeds with using multiple tests across my network. My Prime could only get 11MB/sec max so that's a huge difference. I would rarely ever have problems playing across my LAN, but in those small cases I would have jitter or slow down. One example would be the Promethes Bluray. When David the robot was viewing the dreams as the child girl with her father that used a heck of a lot of bandwidth and my Prime always had problems playing that. This player no problem. Also the famous 90Mbit bird scene from EARTH I could never play with my Prime across my network. Now I'm able to play it with no problem.

Long time.. Hope all is well..

How do you rip.. MKV,Full ISO or Main Movie ISO? How do you handle "forced subs"? Any input you have with regards to the players issues with seamless branching and forced subs would be welcome. I am still using Main Movie ISOs and now create an external .srt sub file (forced only created with clown_bd) and drop in folder with movie. This allows the 303D to play external forced sub file with ease.

Just got my new player.
I can stream anything over network except 3d iso.
The file will start to play(black screen) then my hdmi light on Pioneer A/V receiver flashes, it's trying to lock on.then dune goes back to file menu.
If done from usb same file as is good.
I'm using b5 firmware.
If I have the 3d movies in folder structure and try over network, it will play the 3d fine.

I think b5 is corrupt good iso playback.
I tried both nfs and smb with same black screen then back to file menu page

Just got my new toy today.

Tried some iso 3d files via nfs and usb attached.
I get a bug issue...

The file will start to play but no picture and dune will go back to file menu.

I tried all settings and no go.

Then finally........

Got it to work..

Once I start file I have to then goto another input on my Pioneer A/V receiver then back to dune input.now the hdmi will lock on and I get sound and video.

Seems there is a hdmi handshake issue..

Weird..

I'm using b5 firmware..

UPDATE

Good news.
Finally got 3d iso to work over NFS streaming....

Turns out it was how I was sharing my drives that made ISO not work before.

I had several symbolic links in one directory pointing to all my drives.(basically in a sub folder I had all my hard drives listed and linked to those drives).
So, when pointing my NFS server to this directory to access all my drives at ease, I would run into ISO3d not working.

To fix this, I just decided to point NFS server to hard drive direct that I wanted to share. It worked!!!!!!!

Weird as with other way I was able still to play any files and even folder structure of 3d Blu-ray backups

b5 played fine streaming 3D ISO over smb for me (all my 3Ds are in ISO)

Interesting.

I get same black screen with nfs and smb.

I did notice that when playing from usb same files, my Pioneer would start flashing on hdmi input as it seemed to have problems locking on.
I had to go to another input then back to dune input to lock on.

My mede8er however no problems.

Maybe it does not like Pioneer?
ARe you using b5 firmware?

I have the newest Pioneer sc-68

So the Dune is working fine with 3D ISOs or 3D Folders, but 3D MKVs it won't play, correct? Still on the fence between Dune and Mede8er.
Blip, I was recently on that same fence you are on and I chose the Dune. I don't have anything bad to say about the Mede8er, as I have no experience with it, but I have nothing but good things to say about the Dune. It has played everything so far perfectly. I make all my 2D blu rays as mkv's and my 3D blu rays as isos's. Using Zappiti as a front end is a nice added bonus.

I second this...

Dune one day will also have 3dmkv as well. Then both players will be very close to playback files

My only concern is that the 3d mvc mkv actually turns out to be a chip limitation. I hope to be proven wrong.

I thought the Mede8er and the Dune used the same chip? If not, then that would really be a blow to the Dune. If they do use the same chip, Dune needs to do a little "reverse engineering" of the Mede8er firmware. tongue.gif

Nope, not even close. Mede8er is Realtek, Dune is Sigma. No sigma players so far can play back 3D mvc mkvs (the PCH A400 which runs the SMP8911 can play back, but only in 2D).

Not saying it is a hardware limitation, just going with the approach that I want to see if actually happen instead of assuming it will happen
