ULTIMAX 15 "DEAL OF THE DAY" - Page 2

So will a BASH 500w plate amp be enough to power the Ultimax 15 in a 3cuft sealed enclosure? Or do I need to jump up to the Dayton 1000w plate amp?

Thanks in advance,
-Dave

You'll give up 3db of headroom going with a 500 watt amp.
How many of these do you guys think would be required to get to 115db+ from 20hz up in a 15x20x8 ft room that is pretty well sealed? I am thinking boxes that are around 4 ft^3.

Quad is a good start. smile.gif

Thanks for the reply. Changing the resistors in the amp to add 3db of bass boost from 20-24 will help no?

One, if you put it in a f-20 horn.

That will give you a slight bump to the low end response, it wont give you anymore output though.

So jumping between the UM15 and 18HO. I like the comparison earlier in this thread and definitely like the box size savings; however has anyone modeled the UM15 against the SI 15's??? I was originally going that direction before things got complicated rolleyes.gif whatever I do there will be four of them at the 1/4 points on the front/back wall.

Got the msg. rolleyes.gif

Lol, jk.

Here is a comparison between the Ultimax 15 and the SI 15". T/S specs were from the manufacture. Box size is limited to 4cuft and power is limited to 600w each.

Pretty similar when overlaid. However, the Ultimax has a flatter, smoother natural response that likes this larger enclosure. It's almost perfect. The SI has a bit more displacement on hand and is low Q in this enclosure. One could easily squeeze it in a much smaller enclosure without bringing a bump in the response at the expense of low end sensitivity.

Seeing as how the U15 is on sale at the moment, if I were in the CONUS and had no problem using a 4cuft box for it, I'd go with that one. Free shipping. wink.gif The SI is also a very good choice if it's anything like the 18" version. It also can be pushed to a much smaller box if needed.

Many thanks Scott .. for the $35/pr shipping .. I think I would prefer the smaller enclosure (SI) since there will be four of them .... for starters (evil laugh)

~ for every three subs, you get space for a free one!

Well there you go then. smile.gif

The 15" SI HT models well in 2-3cuft if you're using 500-1,000w.

So the UM15 is no good in a 3cuft box?

What makes you say that? It isnt ideal, but it will still work well.

My lack of knowledge in this area I guess biggrin.gif

Well, I can't afford to go the 1000w amp. I'm pushing at the limit as it is.

So looks like I'll have to do the UM15 in a 3cuft box with a 500w BASH plate amp.

I'm hoping to order in the next week or so.

Thanks guys!

I received my 15" Ultimax today and it is pretty impressive. My son and I just were grinning ear to ear as we pulled it out of the box. If it sounds half as good as it looks we're both in for a great treat. Planning to put it in one of Erich 3cuft sealed flatpacks. Still have to buy and amplifier and I'm looking primarily at either a Crown XLS1000 or an Behringer nu1000, but also would consider a Dayton SA1000 or Behringer EP series if I find a good deal.

Pics or it didn't happen.

I'd go with the nu1000DSP; unless you have a EQ/XO already?
Those flat packs from Erich sure look nice and the sub is sharp looking as well, must resist as I already too many subs............

Let us know how hard that sub rocks Whitey!

[Building a box with a buddy now too - cant wait to fire it up shortly! It's a 21" cube for 4 cubic feet internal.

PL inside the box and outer baffle are drying now. Will do flush trim and roundovers on Thursday night. biggrin.gif

Are you going to use a router and round the 4 hard edges front to rear or leave them as is?

You going to compare it to one of your 18" HO's Rilla? Just wondering about SQ comparisons as I know your 18's are DO so that wouldn't be a fair comparison in the SPL dept.

Sure, we will probably do some testing in my basement before he takes it home I'm guessing. Either way, I'll be listening to it quite a bit while we're setting it up. smile.gif It's an awesome looking driver, I'm already trying to talk him into buying another one. smile.gif It will be powered by one channel of an EP4000 for now.

Such a bad influence smile.gif Thankfully you talked me into the EP4k so I'll have enough power to add more, but I need to first see how my neighbors feel about one of these subs since I live in a townhouse. eek.gif

I decided to go with the Crown XLS1000.......will let you know how it goes.

A couple pictures of the finished product. The surface has a very nice texture, but the spray finish turned out a little uneven. I may just roll over it with some satin black paint. Now I'm just waiting for the amplifier to be delivered.

I currently have the Reference HF @4ohm in my car off of 500W RMS in a 3 cu ft sealed box. Would the Ultimax be a big step up in SQ, or am I good with the HF?

Unless you plan on upgrading the amp to something twice as powerful you are good with what you have.
