Time to take the Samsung DLP under the knife!

Thread Starter
Samsung HLP6163WX/XAA, bought at Circuit City (remember them?) back around Feb 2005. It was a display model from I think the 2004 model year.

In the last couple of years I've replaced the color wheel, and then last fall the lamp.

A couple weeks back it started acting up again. Out of no where, as these things seem to be…

No picture on the display. Doesn't seem to want to respond to power off or any other buttons on the remote. So I unplug, let it sit and plug it back in.

Power it on (as it turns out I don't think the power button did anything), the lamp is lit up but nothing on screen. Then eventually it power cycles itself - or looks like it, and then tries to display something but the input isn't picked up (shows me what port's selected HDMI in this case) and I see a flash of various colors, kinda like the old horizontal & vertical hold when the OTA signal wasn't quite right.

I think that happened about a grand total of once, after that it's just no picture even though the lamp would still light and I can tell the screen was getting some light to it (lightens up vs being completely dark).

Call a tech, they come out and diagnose it as digital board. Fine, we order it and he comes out to give it a shot. No dice. Now the diagnosis is DMD board. And, symptoms changed slightly as now the LAMP LED flashes but the lamp is NOT on. Fans are spinning, and I think the tech had said the color wheel was too. After a few seconds, maybe 5 or so I hear some kind of pop out of the speakers, faintly. Almost like it reached the end of its power up cycle and that's when it would have displayed the picture if there was one to display.

Keep in mind all that happens just by plugging it in. Push a power button you get nada. Maybe if I let it sit it'll do something else but so far that's been it.

Reviewing some troubleshooting flowcharts seem to point to DMD but looking for another opinion on that matter. From what I see it's entirely possible the lamp won't light and it be the DMD and not a ballast. At this point I wonder if we have multiple failures. With the digital board swap doing nothing I am not confident that diagnosis was correct.

Thanks.

Hello!

I'm BRAND new here, but have been a HLP6163 owner since 2004. I read your post, the diagnosis from the tech, and have been waiting as patiently as you have been for a reply. smile.gif

I signed here because I wanted to ask a TON of questions from the Experts here. But in the meantime, I'll share what I know with you regarding the Older version 61" Samsung.....

My "Old" Sammy is the HLP6163. The "Newer" Samsung I'll refer to is a 2009(maybe?) model HL61A650C. Both are bulb TV's and both have light engines with color whels, DMD boards, ballasts, etc, and the usual failure prone innerds! But the Old 61" is still going strong after all these years and ALL those long hours. I have replaced 3 bulbs in it, most recently in Nov '12. The color wheel has also been replaced with the newer "Air Bearing" style in 2009. I've done all those repairs, as few as they've been.

As for your DMD Board question, THAT'S why I'm here. My New 61" has been dead for 6 months now. I am experiencing the EXACT same symptoms with it as you are on the HLP6163. I've been waiting for 2 weeks now for a replacement DMD board, because all my internet searching and the hours reading here, have led to it's replacement.

So I wanted to reply & let you know someone is reading you... just don't have an answer for you yet. If the DMD gets my New 61" up & running again, I'll tell you he:Dre first? biggrin.gif
