"Budget" HTPC, need advice?

Hello, I was reading thru some old threads on htpc's and would like some recommendations on what parts I would need. I've done a lot of reading and once I figure out what I need I will have my nephrew put it together for me. I want a budget htpc and to spend as less as possible and will be happy as long as it fits my needs. I just brought a new sony s590 blu ray player and wouldn't mind taking it back if I can get a htpc to work.

My current equip list:

Denon 2112
Samsung 51in 720p Plasma
5.1 surround sound
Sony S590 Blu ray player
TDS hi def cable box
Nintendo Wii

My equipment is on the other side of room in my bonus room and all equipment runs thru my Denon which is connected to TV with one hdmi. I don't want to run another cable and would like to connect the htpc to my receiver as well and run it over hdmi to my TV. I do have a lan hub behind my equipment.

My needs are as follows:

- blu ray player 1080p (when I upgrade to newer tv, 3D is not needed)
- wanted to connect the htpc thru LAN to my home network
- would like to be able to stream netflicks, hulu, and other svcs (wouldnt mind buying a roku if I had to)
- need 5.1 surround and it has to connect to my receiver hdmi to go to tv
- want to be able to surf the web and bring up pics, video and view youtube, etc.
- I'm not a video gamer(may play a gm here or there). I have a wii already which we play
- I would like to store music that my denon could access thru airplay to play
- would like to be able to play burned dvd's also
- would like a tv tuner as well for the day I do decide to cut the cord with my TV provider and be able to watch Over the air channels, stream videos and watch internet content
- would like to be able to use a wireless keyboard and mouse to be able to access web browser and internet on the TV
- would like some type of DVR-R type platform I could record streaming movies or video offline to my hard drive(if this increases the price by much I could do with out this function)

I do have an external 1TB ddrive if that helps. Other than that those are my main needs. As you can see I think I'm just looking for something pretty basic and I am looking to keep the cost as low as possible(under $200 or around this price point would be great). I figure if I can get the blu ray to work on HTPC I can take the Sony blu ray player back and that would be $110 I can put towards the build.

Thank you,

Chris

If your budget is only $200 your going to have trouble ... it's a bit low.

But still possible.

You could do:

G530/G540/G550 or G1610/20 Celeron ($35) CPU
Asrock H61 or 75/77 Mobo $69
4Gb DDR3 $30
Case + PSU $50
60 GB SSD (refurbed or crappy one) $50

The build I gave you in PM was much better but cost a little more:

For a simple but full functional build I would look at:

Asrock H77 Motherboard ($65-$80)
Intel CPU (Celeron/Pentium/i3) $39-$115
8GB DDR3 1866mhz (minimum 1600mhz) ($35-$49)
Vertex4 or Samsung840 SSD for OS ($99)
Seagate 3TB 7200.14 HDD for storage ($120)
Good 300-400 watt PSU ($30)

You can get some nice cases that come with PSU under $100. Some as cheap as $50.

If your looking for a really nice case I would use a Silverstone MILO 03 mATX case and combine that with a 77 level Asrock Matx motherboard. Just check the PSU size since only smaller PSU fits. I used a $20 coolermaster that is really nice.

I'd say the quoted one was better advice but if you must $200 then you need to cut some corners. wink.gif

Bluray playback software is at least $50. Add anothet $50 for the bluray drive.

I might have missed it but do you want windows? That's another $100.

You are already at budget.

Ok thanks for the suggestions, so lets say I up my budget and spend an additional $200 (not including the blu ray player, blu ray software and windows) putting my budget at a total of $400 what would you recommend? I got 30 days to return the Sony to BB so need to get my parts list together so I can get to building!

Thanks,

I already gave you basic advice. You'd have to post a suggested build for us to narrow it down.

Another choice:

AMD A4-5300 or A5-5400K APU
FM2 A75/A85X chipset mb
DDR3-1600-DDR3-2133 2 x 2GB-2x4GB

OK thanks for responding. I wasn't doubting you at all, I just didnt know it was only one way to build the HTPC. I assumed there were other ways to go and that there would be other recommendations and chime in as well. As the saying goes, I guess that what happens when you "assume"!

Thanks,
