I spoke the the girl friend and she authorized for the purchase of two of the stand up speakers from Polk in that line up, on sale at 104 a piece! So I'm ordering tonight. And ill find the center later

I personally have been looking at these Polk New Monitor 65t's A pair will run you $280. Spend another $200 on a receiver and you will have a system that goes down to 50 hz. Not ideal but add a "good" sub and center channel in the future and you will have a pretty nice setup.

I post this thinking mroe in terms of a long term system goal. Another route would be to go with These which regularly go on sale for $169 for a pair. Add a $200 receiver and you have around $130 to 150 to spend on a sub or center channel. You could then buy floorstanders in the future and move the Bookshelves to surrounds.

Let me be the first to admit that these are some speakers I have been considering for purchase, but I have not heard them so they may have great specs but terrible sound.

What makes that reciever better? And I think that I may not be upgrading speakers for a while, i think this price range is a good way to enter the hobby. Right now anything is better than what u have

Is it worth buying the floor standing speakers for the fronts? Or is it better to buy the regulars? I like the look of the floor standing ones but unless they are worth it I may have to skip them. What's your opinion guys?

And those 65ts look pretty sweet, would it be worth it coughing up the extra money to get those? And how would that Yamaha reciever do with such large speakers?

Update...

I went to best buy and listened to the pioneers and the polks. I began by listening to the pioneers and I like what I heard. I then switched to the polks and was blown away they sound amazing. I'm sold! I'm going to be buying the polks.
Which polks? The t100's? Did you heat them with a sub or on there own?

Alright so I was thinking that if I buy the floor standing speakers, a pair of bookshelves for surround, and the center plus the v373 reciever I'd be at 615 but have no sub. Alternativly I can buy the reciever and the pair of bookshelves speakers and have enough money.left.over for the sub iv been drooling over (klipsch rw-12d ) that's on sale for 300 on newegg. Sigh decisions decisions. Another thing iv realized is that I'm going to have to either get ceiling mounts for my rear two speakers or stands since wall mounting will not work do to a long window directly behind the main viewing couch.

The surrounds in a 5.1 system should be placed on the sides, even with or slightly behind the listening position. Rear speakers are added in 7.1 configurations.

Then I would need stands if I decides to go with option 1. What are some affordable options for stands?
I would go with the bookshelf speakers for fronts get a sub and skip the towers thats just me. A sub and 2 bookshelves will sound better than the 2 floor standing and cost about the same.

I spoke with the gf and we are going to go ahead and get the speakers and wait on the sub (I would have rathered the sub) but the girlfriend has the final say. Regardless I have a small sub that I can use that plugs in through an 3.5 headphone jack. I think I can make it work? Anyways now to figure out where to huh speaker wire and stands

Cost of towers he is looking at are $105 each (on sale) and bookshelf is $110/pr (on sale). Sub is $300.

So its $210 for two towers or $410 for 2 bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer.

So in this case the cost is not nearly the same.

31" stands
http://www.amazon.com/SANUS-SYSTEMS-BF-31B-Speaker-Stands/dp/B00006JQ5O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1362616069&sr=8-3&keywords=speaker+stands

24" stands

You'd probably need the 31" stands for surround speakers.

Picked these up today from best buy they priced matched the reciever so u couldn't resist. The rest of the speakers are on order from Polk directly. I was happy I got my Logitech sub to work with the reciever since its a 3.5 audio jack. Here is how its looking so far. Don't kind the wires going to the tv, I'm going to be running the through the wall later. ybytareh.jpgave7yvys.jpg

I al blown away with how great this sounds. It's only the center and I'm already hearing a huge difference
post #81 of 96
Who said he has to buy a 300$ sub? I just got a BIC 10 used for 100$ and it sounds fantastic. The Pioneer sub for 150 isnt to bad either I would take either of those and 2 bookshelves over the towers.

You need a cord concealer from best buy or somewhere else! smile.gif

Okay I'm now setting up my receiver. What should I place my crossover at?
How is your sub connected?
If YPAO is like Auddysey, when you run it it will set your crossovers for you. Thats a good start. In the long run (read, if you had a normal sub setup) you would set your sub and your front channels at the same setting. Sub will handle everything below that setting and fronts everything above. Without the built in room correction or appropriate equipment to determine actual speaker capabilities I would set my crossover point for that setup at 100 or 120 Hz conservatively.

I expect that that setup is going to be capable of 80 Hz (the polks that is) and I have no idea if you can set up the sub using the 3.3mm input as the source (headphone jack?).
