modern theaters are using dlp...not film. Film will flicker...there's no 2 ways about it.

And yes..I tend to agree that 60Hz is fine anyhow...
The 48Hz is useless depending on what you're watching. On my old G20, which didn't go higher than 48Hz, I would try to watch as much as possible with 48Hz on. For some stuff (like really really bright stuff) I had to just turn it off because the flicker could get very intense. I've read some people saying that even at 96Hz the VT flickers too much, but I rarely ever notice any, and if I do, it's mild at most. Last year's Panasonics did a very good job set at 60hz when the source was set to output 1080p/24.
Well I suppose we do need 48hz for 3D though, right?
no reason that you would need 48Hz for 3d...3d would just use 3:2 pulldown at 60Hz.

Any 3D settings will tell you to use 48hz though, it drastically reduces cross-talk.
That's true. Setting the display at 48hz in 3D as opposed to 60hz definitely looks better with less crosstalk.

So do the S60s do okay as far as providing brightness and somewhat minimizing reflections in a somewhat brighter room? I am deciding whether or not to recommend this to my brother who is looking right now for something in the 46-50" range around $700 or so.

Bright yes, but probably not very good at all with reflections.
I just saw these in Best Buy yesterday. The S60 looks brighter than the TC-P60GT50 I saw there. I don't know if thats because the GT has the filter and it makes it look darker, but the S60 looked brighter. (I had the GT50 in custom mode and the gamma up, and the panel brightness at high) I know the S60 doesn't have the filter so it would have a good amount of reflection by sunlight and ambient light (lamps, etc)

My P42S60 is on it's way from ABT. Thanks everyone in this thread for helping out.
I'll be interested to hear your impressions...what is abt?
nevermind that question...I see what abt is.
For those who actually own the S60, how is the glare on this set? I don't care about the 3D,apps. homescreen, etc., just a great PQ. At the price the 65 version is being advertised; it's making it a lil harder to overlook and jump to the ST60.
I'd never heard of ABT, but their price beats everyone else's by quite a bit. I did some research and it sounds like it's a very popular non-chain giant chicago area megastore. Seems totally trustworthy.

My local BB has the 50" S60 and ST50 side-by-side on the upper row in their wall display, and FWIW, the S60 did seem to be more reflective in the brief moments of black screen in their loop.

Same thing at my BB. The 50" S60 looked like a mirror, it is honestly one of the most reflective screens I have ever seen.

Since it has no filter, it might as well be. biggrin.gif

However, the upside is that you will get a screen that's free of deformities.

Yup....no DSE

Maybe too soon to ask, but any sense on how long these take to come down in street price? I'm looking for a 42" set and would prefer this one over the older Samsung PN43E450, but would much rather find a set in the ~$500 range. We talking a month? 3 months 6-12 months? Until the next model is coming out?

Prices are already low compared to last year plus when u factor in small improvements it makes the 2013 tvs a better deal

Just ordered a TC-P65S60 from ABT. (Shipped the day it was ordered... and used fatwallet so received 4% cashback. Yes, it does work and have been using it for years.)

I know it's very early since the model was just released, but does anyone have any settings / calibration numbers yet for any of the S60 series?

Is the panel itself the same as the U series from last year? If so, could I use the settings from that model just to hold me over temporarily until the S series is reviewed and settings posted?

Thanks in advance.

Hopefully it's much brighter than the U series, so those probably won't translate very well.

The ST50 settings might not be too bad?

I don't quite follow. Did you mean to say the 2012 models are a better deal since the improvements were small?

Edit: Or is it that the model you linked to is a 2013 model?

Went ahead and picked up a P50S60 at my local BestBuy. Calibrated it with my i1Display2 LT and colorHCFR using the AVS HD 709 disc. Had a bit of trouble tuning in the settings, not sure if it's my meter having issues or what. Will do another calibration after 100 hours and will possibly pick up a ColorMunki at some point. Here are the settings I came up with:
Quote:
custom
contrast 83
brightness -2
color 44
tint 0
sharp 0
warm 2
vivid color off
cats off
video nr off
mpeg nr off

pro settings
panel brightness low
agc 0
black ext 0
color gamut normal
w/b detail adj
w/b high r -10
w/b high g 0
w/b high b 12
w/b low r 6
w/b low g 0
w/b low b -10

color detail
all default except for
green lum -10
blue lum -5

gamma 2.4

1080p pixel direct off
hdmi content type default
hdmi/dvi rgb range standard
black level light

Above settings give me an average gamma of 2.34 with de's for grayscale ranging from 2.3 to 9.3 (I obtained a much better calibration aside from horrible gamma of 1.9 for my P42S2, all de's under 3 and some under 1), and my color de's are ranging from 5.1 to 10.2 for both primary and secondaries. I calibrated using large APL patterns for both grayscale and colors, and I used 75% color patterns.

Also I have 31 ftl with this contrast level.

FairChild are you happy with the picture quality? Is it great bang for the buck?
So I hear LCD sucks and Yes i have one i bought one in 2008 it does the job! I want a plasma! i been told plasmas are better! Since i never been able to spend time watching anything from a plasma except seeing my friend`s that is 3 years old Pany! I know i am not impressed with leds except the high end ones that start at 2000 . SO my question is I want the st60 but i will never use the 3d or internet ..since i have a apple laptop and apple tv! My biggest question is the blacker blacks and the 2500 focused field make enough differenced that i see over the S60? Last question I really want a 60 so would you go s60 in a 60 or spend the more and get the st60 in a 55? Pq is the biggest concern for me then size!
Fairchild, did you try hdmi content type-->graphics. I thought that was the prefered setting on last years panels.

Graphics was definitely not a preferred setting.

Yes, the picture is very nice. Colors definitely seem to be popping more now. I will say my desktop through my HTPC definitely looks different now, like everything looks clearer for some reason. (maybe I need to tweak my font settings again) I verified also that if you enable the 1080p pixel direct feature and set my AMD card to Full RGB 4:4:4 and chose to pass the non-standard (0-255) signal in the HDMI/DVI RGB Range option, I now pass the chroma 4:4:4 tests. I decided to just use RGB Limited 4:4:4 though since that way both my videos for my cable box and ota signal will work with the same settings so that my calibration carries over to all signals.

I can definitely notice deeper blacks and the improved gamma, but again I'm going from a 2010 Panasonic S2 which had the AR filter, to this.

reviews are finally hitting:

Don't know how trustworthy that site is, but certainly not making me regret my choice.
