Television: Samsung UN55B8000 LED
Receiver: SAony STR-K740P with stock 5 speakers and sub
DVD: Panasonic DMP-BDT220P

i have no cable box and this set up is for watching dvd s only.
tv to bl player connection is hdmi. bl player sound connection is regular component cables, red and white and a separate video component wire. from what i have been reading to achieve 5.1 i also have to connect an optical cable from bl player to the receiver. is this correct? do i leave component and video cables in place? if it helps, if you familiar with receiver, on its display there are icons for every speaker that are lit up, but two of my surround speakers are not , leading me to believe im not getting true surround. any input will be appreciated

Since the receiver doesn't have HDMI, just connect a single optical cable from the player to the AVR and set the player output to bitstream. That will give you surround sound. You don't need any other connections to the receiver. Video runs direct to the TV using HDMI and the analog stereo cables are not needed.
