Basement Renovation - N00B to Home Theater

basement.png 283k .png file Hello Experts, first time poster but lurking for a while. I've gutted my basement and have finished framing per the drawing below. I'm roughing in the electrical and data now (CAT6), data is not shown on the drawing but I'm putting in home runs from the electrical panel area to the rooms in wall jacks.I'm thinking about putting in a multi-room recieiver so I can run speakers to my outdoor deck. In the basement I am kind of limited with the layout and here is my best attempt. I already have the plasma and I'm going to Best Buy later to pick up a Pioneer VSX-53. All walls will be R19 insulated and the ceiling wil be dropped not fixed. One last thing, the wife saw in wall speakers and now it's a must have.

I guess my best option is to go with a 5.1 set-up in the mixed use room and then have a zone 2 for outside. Any different ideas? Can i put 2 additional speakers in the area near the air hockey table that can be used as additional outputs but not necessarily surround sound like 7.1?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Sean

What audio are you going to be sending to the air-hockey area? The movie/tv audio playing through the 5.1 or Zone 2 audio? If zone 2 audio and your amp's zone 2 is powered, which I believe it is from browsing the manual (as long as you use the speaker connectors and relegate the receiver to 5.1), you may be able to use an impedance matching speaker selector to send audio to air hockey and outside. You also will have a zone 3 which you could use but that would require another amplifier like an AMP-100 from parts express to power zone 3.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that I would have 2 additional speakers near the Air Hockey area play whatever is on the main zone, movie or music. I am intending on putting the tv on a full motion mount so it can swivel out for wider viewing, it'll come in handy for sports events I think. So the second zone will run the outdoor speakers. Do I need an amp for that? I was assuming the reciever would power those. BTW, I already picked up the Pioneer and got the last one at the store.

It doesn't appear that you will need an amp for Zone 2 if you use the speaker terminals (which would be 6 and 7 of the 7.1) based on that receiver and my quick perusal of the owner's manual. If you want to use Zone 3 then you would need an amp. It appears from the manual that if you use Zone 2 you can get stereo audio of what is playing in zone 1 (tv) at the air hockey table. Then an additional amp for zone 3 could power your outdoor speakers.
