Roku 3: Shipping March 6, Still no YouTube Channel

The Roku 3 is about to ship, Roku.com, Amazon.com, and BestBuy.com are already taking orders for the new set top box that will feature over 750 "channels". New features include a remote control with a headphone jack, a revamped interface, a much more powerful processor to speed up browsing, and dual-band WiFi. The first orders will ship on March 6'th which means Roku 3 units should be in users hands by Thursday, March 7. At $99 and chock full of features, the new Roku 3 aims squarely at the Apple TV with more features and more channels per dollar. Unfortunately, the new unit still does not include a YouTube channel, which is one of the most requested features. The new Roku 3 should appear on store shelves some time in April.

The new Roku 3 has one more feature up its sleeve and it's a neat one: private listening mode. Plug in a pair of headphones to the remote's headphone jack and you can listen to whatever's playing on your Roku. Plugging in the headphones also automatically mutes your TV, and headphone volume can be adjusted using the rocker on the right side of the remote. Another smart feature: the headphone volume leaves the TV volume unaffected.

Can Roku 3 read an external hard drive with movie files like WD TV Play?

Don't see it on Amazon.com yet.

You are right. I deleted that. BestBuy.com is also taking orders and shipping today.

This is an interesting unit. I also heard the interface had a bit of a makeover as well. I love the headphone jack in the remote control, that is pretty neat.

I would love to try one out, but I have full of Apple products at home and use the AirPlay on a regular basis. In my opinion, you need to jailbreak your ATV for it to be a real competitor to the Roku and Boxee.

Thanks, this just might be my first Roku I buy. Just waiting for reviews on what type of files it plays. And how well it plays them. I already 2 different WD models.

Orders it from Roku. I use my PS3 for Netflix but it is very laggy. The Roku 3 should be faster and use less electric. I also like the fact that I can plug in headphones through the remote.

Also not having YouTube is a big plus for me. I hate YouTube more than anything. I do hope they have a Slacker Radio channel.

Yes, Roku has a Slacker channel.

You can search/browse what Roku offers here: http://www.roku.com/channels#!now-playing

Thanks, I was running low on rediculous statements today.

Does anyone know if the Roku 3 still works with the old style IR remotes, or is it now RF only ?

Also, for video out. Is it still RGB !!! :-(

Does the Roku upscale SD content say from Netflix to 1080p like the PS3 does?
