BenQ W1070 vs Sony VPL-HW50ES

Yea, yea, I know... many of you will say this is like comparing apples to oranges. But with all the hype over the BenQ and it being a great bang for your buck projector, has anyone compared either on a large screen? I'm not seeing how many FL there are with the Sony as the Elite Projector Calculator site doesn't have any info on it. But I'm trying to find out if in calibrated mode, it has enough lumens for my 165" screen since the BenQ would suffice. However, comparing these screen shots of both on a smaller screen and in their best calibrated mode, the Sony blows the BenQ away. And it's sharpness is unparalleled. Any input is appreciated.

Its impossible to answer this question. Its like trying to give the answer to please add the following five numbers and then only giving three numbers.

What is your screen aspect ratio and is 165 the D or the W. What is your screen gain and what is your intended throw distance. Happy fruit salad

Sorry...165" is diagonal, 16x9, and a 1.0 gain screen, and throw distance can be up to 25'. I'm also looking at the BenQ W7000.

165" wow that is huge... throw distance me be near 21 feet.. your probably going to need a higher gain screen..

I owned the w1070 for about a week before selling it and getting the hw50. I have a 159" HP 16:9 screen. Both projectors 17 feet from screen the w1070 is brighter then the Sony in all modes except 3d. I found the Sony to be brighter in 3d with glasses on high. In terms of everything else it's silly to compare. The Sony by far is miles and miles better.

I will say the w1070 is an excellent projector considering it can be had for $899 but I'd be hesitant to by either projector at 21 feet away from a 165" 1.0 gain screen. Can you put the projectors any closer?

I am not going to look this up but what exactly would be the minimum throw possible with that projector and screen size?

Per projector centrals calculator just under 17 feet throw with the Sony. Image brightness 11FL. This may be okay for 2d but 3d would be very dim.

And what would it be for the BenQ.

Bottom line neither projector is really suitable for this large a screen size even at minimum throw.

This is a perfect case for using a HP if the projector can be mounted near eye height..

Mark,

why would the benq not be suitable? Is it because of the brightness? On his screen 1000 lumens will give you 12ftL, 1300 lumens 16ftL, and 1600 lumens 20ftL. Or is it because if you blow the image up that big that the PQ will take a hit?

Its a really big screen. Who knows what the actual gain is. The bulb will wear. Initially it might be adequate but using a HP instead of a unity gain would make either a decent choice for that large size screen. Of course, I would prefer the Sony for 2D.

As Mark said, it is a brightness issue. Image quality aside, that screen is not a good match with either projector.

I have been thinking about going bigger on a neutral gain screen with a jvc, about 10ft wide. Hoping that it will have increased lumens when they do bring out a 4k projector in a year or two. I used a 1.1 gain 117in wide screen before with a RS40, it worked ok for me but I been using a HP screen since and don't know how my eyes will take the hit in brightness

Would the w1070 be too bright for a 84" screen? Projector central estimates 39 fl at 9 ft throw distance. I could use a Elite cinegrey screen with 1.0 gain but I doubt that would help much at bringing down the brightness.
