Replacement suggestions for Onkyo HT-S907TX w/SR604 receiver:

Hi,

I'm looking for some suggestions on replacing the Onkyo system I have. Long story short, did some remodeling in my condo, and want to upgrade.

The speakers that came with the system were always kind of big and would prefer to get something much smaller. System is from 2006, so the speakers were rather large at that time.

Recently purchased a Panasonic TC-P60GT50.

My needs are:

- Smaller speakers
- 5.1 with the option to upgrade to 7.1 if possible
- More HDMI connections (currently only have 2 in the SR604 receiver)
- I mostly watch Blu-Rays and Xbox/PS3
- $500 budget

Is it better to run HDMI connections from Fios box/Xbox/PS3 to the receiver and then out to the TV, or run the HDMI directly to the TV then audio out to the receiver via Optical out?

The GT50 has ARC on HDMI port 2, and from what I've read, not all receivers are compatible with that.

Thanks in advance for your replies

It is definitely better to connect the devices to the AVR rather than the TV. Routing through the TV will limit some, perhaps most, of your sources to stereo.

Thank you for the reply.

I figured as much. I currently have my PS3 and FIOS box connected to the receiver and my Xbox connected to the TV.

I do notice I get PCM audio when I run the Xbox.

is there any loss in video quality when going through the receiver? Other than if I have a bad cable?
