Speaker placement

I have had my living room setup this way for a while now, and while I enjoy my home theater I am looking into ways to improve the speaker placement or rearrange the whole room. I posted a pic to show roughly what I am working with. I eventually want to move up to a 100-120 projector screen so keep that in mind. I was thinking about moving the tv to where the window is, if I did that where would you place furniture and tv/audio? Any help is greatly appreciated!

That's a tough room. Symmetry is very important, so moving the TV to the window wall on the left side of your drawing is a good move. But that puts the sliding glass door at a reflection point, so you'll need a thick curtain there or, better, a proper absorber. These short articles might help:

This article is mainly about home recording, but all the same principles apply to hi-fi and home theater too:

Thanks Ethan!
If I were to move the tv to the window (both sliding glass door and window have heavy curtains) where would you place rear speakers and furniture?

See the Room Setup article that shows the proper angles for speakers. One surround speaker would go on the bottom wall, and the other could probably go on the angled wall where your TV is now.

I would do something like this if it was my room.

This would give decent space either side of the front speakers and a short wall setup that doesn't place the couch directly in front of a wall... so hopefully less peaks and dips in the frequency response.

Yes, good thick drapes over the windows and glass sliding door. You can have the drapes pulled open during the day to let natural sunlight in. No need to be sitting in a dark cave all the time. But late in the evening when you want to watch a good movie or listen to some music... the drapes will come in handy and help a lot.

The couch will need to be experimented with as in forward or backwards to achieve a good response in the lower frequencies as well of course experimenting with sub location.

Not from an acoustical standpoint. You don't want too much (any) furniture between you and the speakers. With the table and recliners down there, they will act to break up and absorb the sound waves before they get a chance to reflect back over the listening position.

It depends on how many people will be watching at once of course. A large family or just two?

But the TV in front of the window will block the view, won't it? I like to look out windows, personally.

Not this window is has a horrible view of the neighbors yard which is not so pretty to look at. Plus right now we have the awning down so you can even look out the window. So thats not an issue...

I agree with Kiwi, but I would try to integrate the recliners and table back into the main seating area somehow. wink.gif
