PS3 and Onkyo TX-SR606 Problem

OK, so I know the amazing amount of problems people have w/ HDMI and this receiver. I don't think it's that, but let me know if this is a symptom too.

All HDMI things going in and out of it work fine. I have it sitting on a grate type thing with open air below, and about 3 feet above and to all sides. It does not get hot and has never stopped or done anything weird ever.

When I first hooked up my PS3, everything worked great. I then updated to the newest PS3 update, and now it won't work.

I have only a PS3 and Directv going in. Then from there, just the standard HDMI out to the TV. (Panasonic plasma) I have tried just going from the PS3 to the TV and that works great. I reset all the video settings to default and still no go.

It's set for what I think is right, but please refresh me if I'm wrong. Pretend I don't know anything.

Is there anyone else with this problem but NO other problems at all?

Also ensure the "Deep Color Output" setting on the PS3 is set to OFF.

It is turned off. Still no go.

With the ps3 off. Hold the power button for 5 seconds. Should reset the audio video settings. Then go in and set them the way you want

Sorry. Didn't see that you already tried that. Try a different HDMI port

depower everything (ie. unplug from the wall). Plug everything back in... THEN, power up the sink (TV), then the receiver, then the source (ie. ps3). Does that help??

Tried different port, tried unplugging/resetting both the PS3 and Onkyo. No change.

*SOLUTION* (sort of)

I DO have it set to pass through HDMI to the TV, so full 1080p should be fine. However, I plugged the PS3 directly into the TV, switched it back to 1080i as the highest video resolution, plugged it BACK into the Onkyo w/ 1080i (not 1080p) and now it works perfectly. I've used this set up as 1080p as the ONLY option on the PS3 on this specific TV before, and never had issues, and like I said, it was working correctly before.

So the end result is that somehow the Onkyo doesn't pass through PS3 1080p signal correctly. Maybe there's a setting OTHER than where you select pass-through HDMI on the Onkyo?

After I got it "working" with 1080i, I tried enabling Deep Color, and that killed the signal as well.

I suggested that you unplug everything... that includes the TV which is the most important thing in the process since its the item that starts things off. Anyways,

Sorry, I looked back at the post and realized I typed it stupidly. I just changed the output USING the TV since the Onkyo wouldn't work from the PS3 to be only up to 1080i and unchecked 1080p. Then I plugged back into the Onkyo and it works. Didn't actually change or reset any other settings on the TV or Onkyo.

As you've found out, the 606 doesn't do 1080p reliably (I have both).

My solution, unfortunately, was to connect the PS3 directly to the TV and run an optical cable to the 606 for audio. I have a separate blu-ray player, so I don't need the lossless audio formats coming through my PS3.

My blu-ray player is also connected straight to the TV for video. I will replace the 606 as soon as I can.

Glad you found a solution to your problem. I hate to say it, but you may experiencing early onset of the HDMI ports failing on your Onkyo. Mine started out with I could get it working by resetting, disconnecting, unplugging etc... Over time, it took more effort and eventually total failure. I'm amazed yours has lasted as long as it has.

A good universal remote (URC MX-350) makes the work-around bearable. smile.gif

My HDMI board has been going down for a while. I had a scare a few weeks ago when the OSD didn't show up. I just bought a $25 HDMI switch so now all video (Apple TV, PS3, Blu-ray, Cable Box) is going directly to the TV. The Blu-ray player has a dual-HDMI out, which allows me to have the lossless movie codecs.

I know it has limited time left. I'm anxiously awaiting the 2013 receiver releases from Onkyo and Denon, credit card in hand.

I'm having the same issue. 99% sure this is your issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj0x5S9ez5U

I called a local service center and they actually recommended I contact Onkyo and see if they will do a one off repair for free. Pretty nice of a service center to not try to get money off of me right off the bat.
Looking on Onkyo forums I think they know they have this issue and are willing to work with the customer on a one by one basis. http://forums.onkyousa.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1344&hilit=TX%25SR606

Good luck! I'm going to contact Onkyo tonight once I get my serial number from my receiver.
