Any way to get the HDMI audio into this old receiver?

Hi,

I have an old Yamaha RXV-1400 receiver that has served me well, but it's before the time of HDMI. Is there any converter or adaptor that could be used to get the latest format of audio signals (such as the latests HDMI from blue-ray dvd) into this?

thanks,

Jason

I believe your receiver has 7.1 multi-channel analog inputs, so all you need is a blu-ray player that has 7.1 analog outputs.

Truth be told, the high bitrate DTS and DD 5.1 tracks on Blu-ray sound great, rivaling lossless in quality. So, it's not a big deal that you can't access the lossless codecs with your older receiver. I also have a pre-HDMI receiver and I bought a player with multichannel analog outs. It didn't cost much more than other players when I bought it. But, if I needed to get a new player, I probably wouldn't pay the premium for MCH analog, which can be a good chunk of change these days.

Yeah, just looking at the Blu-ray selection on Crutchfield, the least expensive one with full analog outputs is a Cambridge Audio for $800. The next is the Oppo for over $1000. Most brands, even the higher end ones like Yamaha and Denon, don't even make a model with them.

Note that you also have optical digital inputs on the back of your receiver, and it supports Dolby Digital and DTS. Really the only thing it doesn't support is uncompressed audio (DTS HD-MA and DolbyHD). But I take it that those are the latest formats that you want...

Bottom line is that you can get a brand new RX-V673 for less than half the cost of a fancy Blu-ray player. And you'll also have the convenience of HDMI switching that way.

The Panasonic BDT500 has 7.1 analog for about $300.

Oh, I stand corrected. That Panasonic looks pretty nice, especially for $300!

Also, that Oppo you were looking at is the high-end 105. The 103 has multichannel out and sells for $499 (but not at Crutchfield).

that looks good! I imagine there is a cable I could get that goes from 7.1 to the receiver? what are they called? I did a little search on amazon and didn't find any.

Buy this, or buy 8 individual RCA cables, or buy 4 stereo RCA cables.

Edit: Changed link to Amazon

There's no need for a spacial cable, although they do exist (some at absurd "snake-oil" prices). The player's 7.1 audio outputs are just standard RCA analog audio connections, and so are the corresponding inputs on the receiver. You can use 8 separate individual RCA audio cables or 4 pairs of red/black stereo cables.

hmm... so another vote that the latest sound technology is not that big of a deal worth getting? It's true that even the Panasonic BDT-500 with the 7.1 analog output ($280) is almost $200 more than its cousin BDT-220 ($80), which has all the features except the analog output & twin HDMI, yet I read the reviews that the remote on that BDT-500 is terrible, and streaming is pretty bad. For $280, I could get the BDT-220 for just playing blue-ray, and get a separate streaming device that does it well...ah.. decisions .... decisions.... smile.gif

I bought a Panasonic Blu-ray player that has streaming and the reviews were bad for it but it works fine. I've had it since right around Christmas and haven't had any problems at all. I'd have to say take the reviews from amazon on the Panasonic players lightly.

Got a BDT-220 for my in-laws and it streams just fine. As for remotes, I suggest picking up a Harmony, especially since you run video and audio to separate devices. Then you'll never need to be concerned about remotes for any equipment you buy.

+1 on the remote I still need to get a harmony. The Panasonic blu ray remote isn't that great
