The right receiver for my setup?

I've ordered 2x TSi300/2x TSi100/1x CS10 speakers for my budget 5.1 HTPC setup (no sub yet, it will have to come later). I would like to keep the cost of the receiver under $250, and I don't mind buying a used one if it will help the price-quality ratio.

I don't require any particular frills such as internet/3d/whatever. The only goals of this receiver is to run this 5.1 system as well as possible within the price range, and I will only ever use it with my HTPC (via HDMI).

Check your local area hi fi stores (eg. Best Buy, HH Greg, etc.) as they are clearing out last year's models to make room for the new 2013 models.

Are there any particular stats I should look for when it comes to choosing one with the best sound quality? Or does it not really matter in this price range? I've never owned a receiver in my life, so I don't really know what I should look for (aside from the obvious 5.1 and hdmi).

For only $250, pretty much anything will be of average quality at best. In the Denon line the 1613 on clearance would be a good choice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I could get the 1613 for $220, so I'll add it to my potential list and continue looking around.

I was hoping to squeeze some quality out for the same price by eliminating unnecessary features such as AirPlay, 3d, and less porte. I'll literally never use those extra features. But if there's really not much difference in this range I guess I'll go with whatever seems to have the most reliable feedback/reviews.

As the HDMI 1.4 features are of no use to you, check your local Craigslist as you may find a higher level HDMI 1.3 AVR from 3-5 years ago in your price range that someone is selling in order to upgrade to a 3D capable AVR.

I beg to differ, even if the HDMI 1.4 features may be of no use now, given the cost of $220 for the 1613, I'll go for this unit. You'd never know tomorrow you'd change your mind about 3D capable AVR? IMO, there is no point buying yesterday technology with "today's" money.

Certainly one person's opinion, but for the vast majority, there is no interest in 3D video now nor likely in the future as well. Not to mentiion the thread starter specifically said "no interest in 3D". wink.gif
