I live in a small apartment in NYC.

I'm running through the Audyssey calibration for my new Marantz AVR and Cambridge Audio speakers. My couch does not face the TV, and my primary listening position is with my back facing the left wall of the room, which means I have to face my head to the left to see the TV.

When Audysset takes me through its calibration setup, it tells me to put the microphone in Listening Position #1. My question is do I 1) put the mic in the position as shown on the Audyssey diagram, or 2) put the mic where I will actually be sitting.

When I move to my secondary listening area, should I place the mic in my leather chair, which is basically on top of my right speaker (across the room from the couch)?

Im from nyc too. Where u here in ny? What stan you are using for the mic?

You should place the microphone at ear level when sitting at your main listening position. Audyssey is fantastic when it comes to support for their products, fwiw.

I have a similar setup (but with additional seating closer to the traditional LP). I would use calibration locations closer to the Audyssey diagram, especially if your actual seating is off-axis (outside the "triangle" created by the front left & right speakers). Because of the (potential) directionality of the tweeters, your room correction could really skew the low-end response if you meaure outside the audio "cone".

Additional listening locations (if your version of Audyssey supports them) should be done within a couple feet of the first measurement. And with the mic at ear level on a tripod or stand (not resting on the seat back or a cushion), as mentioned above.

I did the Audyssey setup and it had problems detecting my sub. There's enough ambient noise coming from outside that it interferes with the setup.

I'm not happy with the sound and I'm not sure if its the speakers or my failed Audyssey setup. I wish I could reset my Marantz receiver back to square 1 and see what it sounds like out of the box.

I'm sure you can. Look through your manual for a factory reset or hard reset option, or try googling for that with your receiver make/model #.

BTW: I live on a fairly busy street, so I wait until late Sunday night when it's most quiet to run Audyssey. That helps me a lot.

I redid the setup this morning, and it worked much better. Last night it was saying my sub was something like 30/40 feet away (in a 12 foot * 14 foot room, mind you). Today the calculations look much better and the sound is MUCH better.
