Hello All,
I am beginning the brainstorming process for a build in a house I just bought. I have been roaming the boards for awhile now and know enough to understand I am going to need some help.
A drawing of the room as is can be found here http://pl.an/cv9hq9#details
The room is ~24 X 13 with a corner cut off. the vertical short wall is 9' and the horizontal is 11'. Windows are on the top and bottom left. This room is supposed to be a formal dining and living room, which we will not be using, and so the cut off corner is part of a hallway; the red lines would be proposed built walls extending the vertical to 16'. The ceiling is 9' tall.
A few very basic questions all revolving around "How do I optimize this space for a home theater?'
1) Will the current proposed (red) walls work as placed?
-I would much rather make the room a true box but the hallway (outside of red lines) will not allow it. The 16' vertical wall(WRT the drawing) is as long as I can make it without obstructing the walking path.
-I plan to have two rows of 3 for seating, and slim seats at that. first row at 9'-10' and the second 4' behind on a tier (this is in respect to top wall with the centered window). Is this preferable?
2) Once the walls are built; What would be the most space effective application of sound isolation?
-I have begun considering the Room W/in a Room concept and believe it can be done on the walls, but I still would need to isolate the floor (concrete slab) and the roof (drywall connected to trusses). Can I do clips on the roof with layers of drywall and GG? Havent seen a best practice for isolation from a slab floor, any suggestions?
-And then the door.... Wife has asked for a double door that she can decorate (on the outside of the room). Depending where the walls are placed I believe she would prefer the door to be in the middle on the right wall of the drawing. Does this blow any chance of isolation or are there strategies to work with this?
-Using RW/inR can I just build a wall over the windows? Another Wife preference would be not to. If I understand correctly windows are pretty much the opposite of acoustically awesome. Should they be covered at all cost?
3) Would love a stage... have seen a few on here that are schweet!!! Still wondering why there is sand in them though. Is it as simple as "there are usually speakers on the stage"? I have some hefty floorstanders that wont need to be put on a stage.
4) Soffits, make theaters look awesome, give some varying aesthetic appeal. Any other use than for easy wiring of lights and conduit for surround speakers?
A good place to start. Thank you to all who read, respond, and possibly tell me I am dead wrong in my thinking. All help will be greatly appreciated!
