Thanks for starting this thread. Saw that most of the blogs picked this up and came here to see if anyone had pulled the trigger. Looking forward to real world field reports on these and other 2013 sets.

70" for under $2000! But I see it's 120hz. Is there much difference between 120-240?

I think videos are always native 60hz, but TVs use frame interpolation to make videos look like they are 120/240hz/480....hz in order to reduce judder. But if you use too much processing, videos will have the soap opera effect. Usually I just use weak motion processing. That eliminates most judder without causing noticeable SOE.

Like contrast ratio (such as 10,000,000:1), the refresh rate is increasingly becoming a meaningless number. As long as a TV has a gaming mode and some sort of weak motion processing, I will be happy and not care if it is 240hz or 120hz.

Right now I have a Panasonic 55DT50 that I got from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $700 but it has some minor problems. If they can fix or replace the TV, I will keep it. $700 for a 55 inch upmarket TV is a really good deal. But if they refuse to service it, I will return it and get the Sharp.

Amazon and Bestbuy have the 60LE650u on sale for 1199 right now. I think that is a pretty decent price considering it seems like the 60LE640u price has jumped to 1499 in the last week. I think I may get it sometime this week.

If you do buy the TV please post a review. I bought a Panasonic 55DT50 for only $700 and like it a lot, but it has some uneven backlighting and a small darkened area caused by insufficient backlight. If Panasonic replaces or repairs the TV I will keep it, otherwise I will return it and get the Sharp 650u.

It seems that a lot of TVs have backlight problems these days. It is sad that production has moved from Japan to Mexicao/China. Labor is a tiny part of a product's cost. For mission-critical products such as large TVs, I am willing to pay 10-20% more if they are made in Japan.

Will do mengqi68. I am not really too skilled at the technical aspects but can let you know if there are any obvious issues right away. By reading people's reviews here and at CNET I was very comfortable with buying the 60le640u but then the price shot up last week and the sears in which I need to get the TV at no longer even carry them. I did have a chance at viewing both of them in person, and the PQ was much better than the comparatively priced 60 inch Samsung and Sony. But of course that is both subjective as well as could be influenced on how the tvs were set up by the staff. I have a feeling the 650U will be the same as the 640u in regards to picture quality, and if that is the case I think 1199 is a decent price. Would feel more comfortabe however if there were more reviews out there but for the life of me I cannot find any.

Does anyone know what improvements Sharp claims have been made to the 2013 vice 2012. I know we'll have to wait until someone actually does a review to see if they really are improvements, but I'm curious what Sharp claims to have done.

If it's just a bezel change I may jump and buy a 70" 2012 model while they're cheap.

How much are the 70" 2012 models going for?? I know that at Best Buy they have the 2013 70 inch for 1999 right now.

Just went to Best Buy and they had a 70 650U in stock. The picture quality is sadly not that great. Peak white brightness is especially disappointing. The picture looks dim and somewhat greyish. Borrowed the remote and turned backlight to maximum, yet still not much improvement. But maybe in a dark room it will look better? The plasma TVs also look dim and greyish.

Thats a bummer. I only had a quick chance to compare it to the 640u and at the time it seemed comprable but I only had a minute. I was hoping to get a TV this week and it has to be at Sears who unfortunately have a very limited LED selection in my price range. My choices are the Sharp 650u, Samsung UN60EH600, UN60EH6100 and the Sharp Quatron LC60LE847U. I guess I will head back down there and check them out some more.

I am surprised that anyone still shops at Sears for electronics....if possible I highly recommend that you try Amazon.

Panasonic is still reviewing my warranty claim. I really hope they can fix or replace my 55DT50 which is an incredible TV for only 700 bucks. The backlight problem is very minor, so it is possible that they might refuse my claim. In that case I will return it and get a 2013 55ET60 or 58E60.

So it seems like sharp has updated smart central and packed a dual core processor in the new 650...does anybody know if the 650 has a web browser, or is the browser only on the 7 and 8 series like 2012 models?

I bought a 60" 650 Friday at PC Richards.It was a toss up between it and a 60" 847.To me the 650 held its own against the 847 and two $2,000 Samsung TVs.The only thing I can fault the TV for was the matte screen,it takes away from the resolution of it.Also the bezel is real thin as well as the depth of the TV.I liked the TV so much that I bought it,but I didnt take it home in hopes of the 657 coming in,I'd rather have that not cause of its 3d capabilities,but cause it has aquomotion 240 that the 650 doesn't.

I have a question, is there some kinda light sensor on this tv? i just bought the 60 inch 650u today for 1199 at BB and it keeps like readjusting the brightness of tv on its own, and now im freaking out because i think it stopped by using the user preset and not standard energy saver but looks to me like its still kinda doing it? id hate to have to return this tv also i returned a samsung 6003 because of black lines and a samsung 6000 series because of the screen also. frown.gif

I'm not familiar with the menus of this specific model but it sounds for sure like there is an ambient light sensor function set to On. As you point out they are sometimes tied to energy saver settings but even then there may also be a separate thing to turn off. Not sure what Sharo calls it though, sorry. If no one chimes in here I'd ask in one of the 2012 set threads. Probably called the same thing on those sets.

From what I remember, it was called OPC or something like that in 2012 Sharp. Look for it in 2013 and turn it off. Should be under the picture controls.

Yes it does have a full web browser, Netflix, huluplus, YouTube, Vudu, Cinema now,pandora, it also has some game apps, they had just set it up at hh

For those trying to figure out how much difference there is between list price and what people are finding these sets for, here are some numbers:

LC-60LE650U : MSRP - $1499.99 with Amazon & BB selling at $1199 (80% of MSRP) or (appx) $300 off.
LC-70LE650U : MSRP - $2499.99 with Amazon selling at $1999 (80% of MSRP) or (appx) $500 off.

So I think we can assume for the other models in Sharp's line-up an Amazon price of somewhere near 80% of MSRP (except maybe for the top of the lines items).

I saw the 60" 650 again today at PC Richards along side the 60" 847 and 60" Samsung 6100 and 6000.To me the 650 does a helluva a job next to these tv's for way less money.The 650 appeared darker then the others at times,for example the cooking chanell was on and displayed was a bowl of beef cubes.On the 650 it was dark meat in a bowl,but on the other TV,s you can see the actual chunks of beef.But when it came time of showing the cooks light blue shirt I felt the 650 did it better than the rest.............NO TV DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT,but for the money the 650 is a very good TV and very good deal.

Yes, there are light sensors on the Sharp TVs. They are currently shipped with the Optical Light Control (OLC) turned on, and Power Saver Mode turned on. Power Saver automatically turns the light sensors on, as well. To fix, simply press the Menu button, find Power Saver (use the + button to advance), and turn it off. Also, look for the OLC page and make sure it is off. After this, your screen will be bright, sharp, and the little green things on screen will go away. I really like the Sharp TVs. The new 2013 models have bigger built-in amplifier that is 20 Watts.

Remember, Sharp TVs have an Advanced menu to correct video issues. Or, let Sharp fully adjust your TV via online (Aquos Advantage Live), and simply tell them how you want your TV to look. Has anyone witnessed clouding on the LC-60LE650U? I have this TV and I notice clouding when starting up, shutting down or when watching a show that has black areas. It is not notcible except with blacks. I have turned off film mode, 120Hz, changed TV modes and it does not really change that effect. I am coming from a Panasonic Plasma TV which did not have this problem.

It is not that big of an issue, however when you spend $1200 on something you want it to work as advertised. Also, I have been using Game Mode mostly since my wife really is turned off by the "Soap Opera" effect.

Any thoughts?

Read the last two pages of this thread for an idea of Sharp LCD state-of-the-art. It seems the thinner the sets get, the more likely clouding is to occur. My theory, at least.

Well i just picked one of these up from bestbuy and i must say i'm not to impressed. I just returned a 60" vizio and the picture on it was wayy better. I've tried multiple multiple settings and i can't even get it close to looking good. It does have good sound and the ps3 and xbox work really good on it with no input lag at all, which was a problem i had with the vizio. I'll mess with it tomorrow but it may end up going back to bestbuy.
