For the same perceived level I'd say features have improved quite a bit but at the same time quality/longevity has not. I have a 919 that died after 2 years, yet a previous Pioneer avr from many years before had lasted far longer.

I'm a partisan, but I'd also recommend looking at Arx speakers (A1b's or the A5 towers) at The Audio Insider. Lots of bang for the buck.

Nothing wrong going with Harman speakers (Revel, JBL, Infinity - as they are among the most respected brands in the world) and Yamaha AVR. Also need a good sub from SVS, Rythmik, HSU, Epik, etc.

I thought they seemed okay on paper, well not sure about the sub, but I don't know if they sound good. Have you heard the Series 1 line?

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check them out when I'm not on my phone. Haha. From what I did read (not very much), they looked pretty good. I really do like those Ascends that cel4145 and lovinthehd recommended.

The Ascends are also outstanding. Lots to be read about Arx at the Arx subforum on The Audio Insider. Lots of user reviews....also Jim Wilson's review of the Arx A1b at Home Theater Shack. None of it can supplant one's listening experience and comparisons, though. The rubber meets the road in your listening space and that's what should sway your final decision.

I have not heard any of the newer HTD speakers (don't have anything bad to say about them, just have not put ears on them yet), but I have heard Ascend products and Arx. They both provide extreme value and between the two of them I don't see how you could make a bad decision.

HTM-200 SE Rear L/R $300 + 24 SH

Sub Total: $1050


HSU VTF-15H Subwoofer - $1022

DENON AVR-1713 5.1ch Networking Receiver w/AirPlay 3D Ready - $330

Now this takes you a little over your budget but for a 5.1 I put the money where I think it should go... Center Channel and Subwoofer. I got the 1713 for the room correction.

Another route is HSU:

Hybrid 15 - 5.1 Package in Satin Black
S/H:$273
$1549.00

EMP Tek, Ascend and as mentioned ARX are all good choices.

How big is your room in cubic feet, and any connecting open areas? A sub sees the whole space (volume). And so that's the determinant of how much sub you need. An 8" sub can work fine in a small bedroom, but would be pretty wimpy in a medium-sized living room. So if you have a really big space, an 15" sub might be best.

Also, HSU and SVS Sound do make 12" subs that will have a little better SQ than the RW-12d if you are looking for better bass for music. Those are good companies to look at if you want to step up in quality a little.

It's a medium sized living room with just a hall way, I know that my JVC Tower of Power HX-Z3 fills the room, and then some, up with deep bass. Maybe for the sound quality and bass I'm looking for I need to bring the budget up a little bit, or just skip out on the other pair of surrounds. That leaves me with $882 to put towards a better sub and AVR. I could add on the other surrounds later.

In a HT ...sub makes it or breaks it imo. But I admit I am a bass fiend... Not as much as some here...but when I play Blackhawk down...I want my neighbors 3 doors down running outside to see what crashed.

When I play Independence Day... I want the neighborhood to think Aliens landed. tongue.gif

Can't have too much sub. Now would two subs be better than one...it depends as noted.

Yeah the Klipsch sub or two...at 299 is a great deal...cant knock that option.

Advice is here to take or leave smile.gif I own the 170SE so I know they are perfectly capable of being front stage L/R (depending on size of room).

Trying to stay in your budget too wink.gif Always compromises with budget and everyone decides what they can live with.

So in all things trust yourself...there is no right or wrong here. I have recommended two of the Klipsch before...they are decent for the price.

That is exactly what I ended up with for speakers and sub in a 5.1 system after a month of research. Completely satisfied with the purchase. Still waiting on the stands for the 340's as they were backordered.

For the AVR I found a deal on a Yamaha RX-V673 for $399.
My 2nd choice would have been the Pioneer 1222k when Newegg has it for sale or I would have been waiting on a Denon sale.

For HT...this would beat 95% of all HT out there IMO.

Of course, 97% of a statistics are made up. But honestly...I think you would be very very happy with this. Don't rule out second hand either...but if your going new..this is a great setup.
