I've seen a 3 metre long set of speaker cables for $40k and even a component rack around that similar figure as well... and both with some gushing reviews in some glossy hifi magazine with the usual buzzwords about how much they improved the reviewer's system. As if a $40,000 component rack can make a system sound so much better than just using a $1000 component rack. Give me a break!
These overpriced products are simply catering for the market segment that equates that if it costs more then it must be better... so therefore I must have the most expensive of everything in order to get that elusive perfect sound. Of course this is a market segment that has been carefully nurtured by the high end hifi industry.
It doesn't matter what particular component you are interested in... there will always be a 30 or 40 or 50k version of it available in the market. The price tag doesn't mean a thing other than the air of prestige the marketing people want to bestow upon it.
