Subwoofer for new Pioneer SP-FS52-LR Andrew Jones Designed Floor standing Loudspeaker

Hi Guys,
I got a new pair of the pioneer Andrew Jones Floor speakers for only 60 bucks each. Brand new and I've been amazed by the sound for the price. It's not B & W, but a great overall sound for the price. I didn't like the sub though and think these speakers will be even better with an amazing sub. I was thinking of the PROSUB800BLA Defenitive Technology sub, but if anyone else has any better ideas, i'm all ears. No pun intended. I've got a Yamaha receiver by the way, to power these.

another thing is I've got an extra Mirage omnisat v2 CC speaker in my bedroom. using it as a 6th channel speaker right now. I'm thinking of trying it as a CC speaker with these two towers. I'm thinking they are so different, that I might be better to get the Pioneer center that goes with these loudspeakers.

That DefTec sub is kinda weak. For that money you're possibly able to still get the current sale at newegg.com for the Klipsch RW12d of $299 delivered. It's even worth waiting for the next sale (it happens regularly).

Thanks, I will look for that.

First see how it sounds with what ya got. Matching timbre is good, but you might like what you have (I use a mis-matched center and L/R speakers in my bedroom and it works very nicely).

PS Be sure and use your avr to set levels for the mismatched speakers (they likely have different sensitivity).

yeah, I know the mirage Center is an 8 ohm and the pioneer speakers are 6 ohm. What would you recommend? I know i've set fronts at 3.5 and Center at 4 before. But this might change things. Thanks.

Uh, you need to learn more. I wasn't talking about impedance (ohm rating, which is also not a single number, but a nominal rating that you've posted), but rather sound levels among the speakers. Do you have an avr with any kind of room correction/sound level adjustment? Post what avr make and model you have...

Yamaha Rx-v363. All I've got is the receiver and remote. I got it for 35 bucks last weekend when a military guy had to leave town.

another thing is i'm looking for something with good clean lows. Not something to explode. I live in a townhouse, so I can't get it too loud. A friend said he would sell me his bowers and wilkins sub at a good price. I was thinking of going that route as well. But I would prefer to buy new.

A good sub is a good sub. Loud is how loud you run it. B&W is okay, especially if you're in the UK, not so much in the US.

I'm going through it right now. I think i'm going to try and find a klipsch sub you were talking about. If not, I might just get the pioneer sub that goes with the front speakers. They get good reviews.

Newegg has a JBL 10 inch sub for 169 that can sometimes be had for 150. It has a glowing review in pdf form somewhere on the net that has been linked to on this forum a few times. I bought it for a bedroom 2.1 system and it is excellent. It has very tight bass. Its very musical. I don't really use it for movies, so I don't know how it would do on that. The sub is called JBL Studio 1 Series SUB150P. I bought the Klipsch rwd12 sub for my parent's expansive living room and that is a nice sub too, but the bass is definitely not as tight as with the JBL. The Klipsch bass goes down to lower frequencies, but honestly, I don't notice a huge difference b/c their room is so big. In the same size room I'm sure the Klipsch would eclipse the JBL. But, I'm very happy with the JBL in a bedroom size setting. I think it would also do fine in a small/medium living room as long as you are not trying to scare away the neighbors. I don't have experience with more expensive current generation subs, but do have Def Tech BP2000 towers that have powered 15 inch subs in them. Of course they can go louder (and deeper), but I don't think the quality of their bass is any better than the JBL. In fact, I think the JBL bass is also tighter compared to the Definitives as well.

Actually the Pioneer sub doesn't get as good a review as the speakers. For the under $300 range I'd look at Polk 505 or maybe a BIC F12 or PL200 first, maybe a Cadence but the Klipsch for $300 is a solid deal. For $500 you could go up to a SVS PB1000 or SB1000.

Hi guys. Ok. I've got a chance to get a PROSUB800BLA Definitive sub new for 180. Or I could do the JBL for 180. I could get both of these subs for under 200. Any gut feelings on what sub would go better with the pioneer speakers? I was thinking of setting the crossover to 100 and let the sub handle almost everything.

How big did you say your room was? For a large room you'd want a large sub I'd think....

it's a very large room with a vaulted ceiling. I've decided to just make it a 2.1 system. I'm not going to do a center or rears. So I want something that's going to be great for music. In the master bedroom I already have a 6.1 mirage system and 3d tv. So this is going to be mainly for music. I'm leaning on that jbl sub.

Not sure there is a "good subwoofer" or bad, for those pioneer towers. You just need a google subwoofer to fill your room. Large room, you probable want a hood 12 inch sub. The klipsch 12 inch would be good...

yeah. Newegg has that jbl for 149 right now and it gets great reviews for music. I think that's how i'm going to go. Thanks everyone.

As a heads up...I listened to the jbles150 the other day. It sounded like garbage, right there along with the pioneer one. You can get a polk505 for 189 online...that sounded a bunch better imo

I have to say that yours is the first bad review I think I have seen of the JBL. I understand that it is not a good HT boomer, but by all accounts it is tight, fast, and accurate within it's limits.

Thanks. The guys at Magnolia at Best Buy was pushing the Martin Logan Dynamo 500 or the BIC America v1220 for music. I wonder what you guys think of those two?

+1. If the sub is too small for the room, you may not be too happy with the results. If you can stretch your budget, get an entry level SVS like the PB-1000. SVS make excellent subs.

this is a great point. While the room is big, I live in a townhouse. So i've got neighbors right on the other side of the wall. ONe reason why I don't want some huge booming subwoofer. I know any sub is going to be somewhat loud. I'm looking for something that's got faster, tighter bass. That will be great for music. I don't have much experience with the Martin Logan, Def Tech, or BIC subs. I will say when I was in Magnolia at Best Buy, the Martin Logan sub sounded much better than the def tech sub. IMO. The B @ W sub was also ok.
No offense, but you're in charge of how loud the sub plays. If you set it up properly the overall volume you play back with will determine the bass content unless you alter it; you can also reduce the bass content playback. This level may or may not affect your neighbors, but depends on how accurate you want the content played back at. Lower frequencies do travel through walls fairly easily, though. Judging a sub by "booming" or "faster" or "tighter" is basically how you set the sub up more than inherent properties of the sub as many use these terms. Tighter and faster are especially capable of representing BS as most that throw them around have no idea what that means in terms of the accuracy of a sub IMHO. Mostly the B&M subs are a poor example of what is possible and the better performing as well as value subs are ID.

THanks for all the comments by everyone. Since I loved how the Martin Logan Dynamo 500 sounded in Magnolia, I went with that sub. Sounds wonderful. Thanks again everyone.

Glad you finally decided. Hope you didn't pay list for that...

Much better than the $500 list. OTOH it's not nearly the sub the Klipsch is for $300.

I just wanted something that not only got great reviews but also one that I could hear with my own ears. They had a basic Klipsch sub at Best Buy, but I didn't like it.
