16 x 18's in a 1500ft^3 Space - Popalock's Sub Build - Page 20

Just remember to add another 1/4 mile to the workout now that you don't have to constantly jump up and down to fix the tripped breaker and you are in good shape. Bout time you got that proper power going, now tell me how ULFtard you can get....

I personally wouldn't be against getting a pair statement pieces in a dedicated stereo setup, but I think your Karma/(future)Temptest SEOS combo is the ticket man! As you have already experienced, you don't have to go expensive for awesome sound and capability! I guess expensive is a relative term though.

So, if she is down with you spending money, dedicating the time AND the DIY look can pass her test....then, man. WOW!

Yeah the more money statement was more geared towards stereo 2-channel reproduction. I have a set of single driver SuperPensil12's I built that are great but there's always that urge to try something different. I'm definitely down with the Tempests for mains in my HT, its gonna be fun biggrin.gif

Yeah, now I get to be lazy...lol

Watching a movie without popping a breaker was a novel idea up until Nathan's help.

Going full ULFtard didn't seem that different from when you demo'd the setup. Just harder to see the screen and achieved royally pissing off the wifey.

Glad to be of help. I went ahead and ordered the parts for the switched outlets, I'll let you know when they come in. I ended up getting 4 relays, 2 or 3 for you and the rest for me to go in my box of wires and random parts.

We can clone her just like they cloned the Lab Gruppen amplifier. Hopefully 1 out of 4bwont crash and burn and be like Roseanne Barr!

All she would really need us a fan mod to quiet her down...lol

Quick update gents.

Recently modded both amps and they are running SUPER quiet. I mean, It's awesome and makes the viewing experience so much more enjoyable.

Figured out what I was doing wrong with the mini... 100% user error. For some reason the default x-over range for output 2 was set from 100Hz-1KHz. Went in and did a quick adjustment and BAM. GTG.

I recently had some 10ga wire show up and plan on running my cabling through the walls. After that, I'll need to throw up a false wall and AT Screen and I do believe I will be close to being com... Well, content for the time being.

Would LOVE too! But I would have to slow play it. I'm talking probably wouldn't be able to throw something together until the end of the year. Give the wifey some attention for a few months, ya know?
Right on. My better half needs a DIY break as well.

Not sure what you have in mind, but I grabbed three of those Celestions on close out from PE. We are going to move in the next two years and I figured if the current speakers end up as part of the deal, I would have some good/ inexpensive replacements.

Sounds like a solid plan man. If I were to build something I think I would want to keep it very small for the time being. Maybe try something along the lines of the JTR S8. Or maybe something like the Fusion 8's just to get my feet wet ya know? I'll look into the Celestions too.

Would LOVE to build my own Ubermains, but that is much further down the road...

I like your idea about leaving them with the house when it comes time to sell! If executed properly I would all but guarantee that one could at least breakeven.

A S8 will surprise anyone that doesn't know what it is!
I have 4 x S8's and 2 more slant 8's on the way. I used to put them on top of my T12's before I got my Noesis and unplug the T12's and just rock the S8's. I've gotten some pretty funny reactions after revealing that it was the S8's playing and not the T12's. I've used them as mains for a few weeks while I was waiting for my Noesis and man, I'll tell ya, other than some midbass, they don't give up much vs the 12's. They go LOUD too! like REAL loud and no distortion to speak of. I run 1000 watts to each of mine. hahahah.

Dayum! Jeff mentioned he had fed them upwards of 1,800watts and they just belt out some truly insane volumes. I'd love to do the same just for the awe factor... But man, $800-900 a piece is a bit more than I would want to spend at the moment. Gotta keep the peace on the home front.

Can you guys think of anything comparable that can touch it from a DIY stand point for like 1/3 of the cost? I'd love to see just how silly we could get on the output front in the smallest form factor possible. I'm not worried about midbass and I'd be down to cross the subs at 100Hz no problem.

Hummm, might have to make a thread on that...
Lol yeah I know the feeling of the $800-900 each! That's why I still only have 6 of the 10 required to finish my build. The wife asked if I'd rather have a pair for Father's Day or another set of seats from Roman and I chose two more seats. In process of trying to make bass traps as my rear enclosures/columns for 2 S8s anyway.

Good idea Austin, something like that would be perfect for me to use as surrounds. I was always impressed with my eD Cinema 6' speakers that I use for my 4 surrounds... until I heard the single 8. A friend of mine just built a pair of speakers that mimic the eD's as far as size but using different drivers and compression drivers. Here is what he used:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=295-015
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=290-536
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=290-636

He is very impressed and we plan on comparing them to my eD's sometime. Something like this but larger - something that could hang with the single 8 like you are saying - is what I am looking for eventually.

Is there any negative effects from your subs vibrating your LCR?

Man, that looks like a plug-n-play solution for about what?...maybe $150ish to build out? Sounds pretty kicka$$.

I'd definitely be interested to hear how they compare to the eD's, so give me a should when that goes down.

I'd be willing to jump at something if I could get S8 performance for under $300 per speaker.

My preliminary research leads me to believe that Jeff uses some variant of the 8CN552 BMS Coax. Would love to follow that general design, ya know?

Only down fall I can think of by going the BMS route (beside $$$) would be dealing with a single US distributor...

If you know what I'm saying...lol

Yes, I have to reposition the LCR after every spirited listening session. A few occasions I've had the LR speakers fall off the boxes. Luckily they only have about 2" to fall back to my wall, so nothing disastrous to note.

My center channel can hop around pretty violently and will shimmy forward or backwards depending on the specific frequency being played... I'll have to post up a video sometime.

Man yall fools don't read my threads??? haha. I am telling yall, these surrounds I built out can certainly be improved on, but for a full set of 4 for around $700 IIRC TOTAL, that have been able to hang with the triple 12's, the SEOS, and anything else I have thrown in my theater. Just sayin'

Keep in mind my response graphs are with them mounted on the wall, I ran the pair with the custom XO as mains for a bit, and while they can't take any 1800 watts, they are some seriously impressive surrounds.

Nice beast! That thread wasn't on my radar at all. I was still in Afghanistan when you started that guy. Looks pretty interesting though. I might scoop up a pair and play around with the 10x10 to perfom the x-over duties. Put this damn gear to work!
That's whats up!!! I want to do a redesign at some point and replace the d220ti with a dna360 to match the SEOS horns, but I am still pretty darn happy as it stands right now. I have several spare parts layin around if you want me to send you some of them to try out biggrin.gif

If you do that then it won't be coaxial design anymore.
You misunderstood, I meant put the DNA360 on the coax, to match the same CD that I use in the SEOS front stage; not use the horn in the box as well...
Does it fit? If so then very nice, however, I have heard both the DE-250 and d220ti and depending on volume I am not sure that is much of an upgrade. They were different crossovers from different companies though so take that for what it is worth.
I would need to look at a screw on variant actually, I didn't think about that.
