Need Recommendation for Network Movie Streamer that can decode DTSMA and TrueHD to 5.1 PCM!!!!!

Hi All,

I recently purchased two Mede8er1000s before realizing that they do not have the capability to decode HD Audio tracks to uncompressed multi-channel PCM (they only downmix to 2 channel PCM). This presents a big problem for me, as I desperately need a streamer (such as a Dune, Popcorn Hour, etc.) with the the ability to decode the DTS-MA/HD and Dolby Digital TrueHD audio tracks found in my blu-ray collection (ripped to a network NAS) to multi-channel PCM. This is because my surround sound processor will only process HD Audio tracks that have first been decoded to multi-channel PCM (it does not recognize bitstream HD Audio Tracks). That being said, I would greatly appreciate advice from those forum members who are experienced in this area (fyi-I'm not interested in a HTPC solution). Specifically, I would like to purchase a movie streamer that has the following capabilities:

1. Can stream 2D (3D movies would be nice but less of a priority) blu-ray folders/.mt2s/.mkv off of a NAS such as Synology Server;

2. Will decode DTSMA/HD and Dolby TrueHD to uncompressed 5.1 PCM *** this is critically important!!!

3. Has exeptional video and audio playback (stability and reliability is imporant)

4. Has a very good user interface

5. Optional local storage playback would be nice but not a necessity

6. Cost is not an object

Lastly, according to the reviews posted on SmartMediaServer.net relating to the latest 3D streamer offerings from Dune, Popcorn Hour and Mede8er, it looks like none of these models can decode HD Audio bitstream to "multi-channel" PCM so please consider this before making recommendations!!!

Many thanks to all!!!

I think you may be mistaken about the Dune's ability to decode DTSMA/HD and Dolby TrueHD to uncompressed 5.1 PCM. Both my Dune Base 3 and my inexpensive (HD audio patched) Dune TV101 can decode DTSMA and TrueHD and output the signal (via HDMI) as Multi PCM to my AVR.

All you need to do is choose PCM (Decode) in the audio settings.

But if you want to go even further... Some current Dune players (Max & Duo) can still decode HD Audio and export it via the 7.1 analog outputs of the player.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Litlgi74, I appreciate your feedback. Very helpful. I think I'll wait until the Dune Max 3D is released this summer. MarkHotchkiss, I guess I set myself up for that remark! Nice! biggrin.gif

It was only half in jest. I would like to be able to afford a Kaleidescape. Heck, I would simply like to know somebody who could afford a Kaleidescape. I don't think Kaleidescape has any dissatisfied customers: they both rave about it.

But back to your question - I think a Dune is a wise choice. However, you might want to go with a current model unless you were interested in 3D. They are the top of the heap for stability, and I'm not sure the Max 3D will be. Intel does not have a good track record in this market. I have the Dune Smart D1, myself.

+1 about the smart models if you don't care about 3D. Don't hold your breath for the Max 3D, they said it will launch in summer, but didn't tell which year rolleyes.gif

Thanks guys. My good friend is a dealer for Kaleidescape so I'm familiar with the product. As for being bullet proof and extremely stable, it's hard to beat. But considering that it's a relatively small company with a deep pocketed plaintiff (the US Government), I'm not keen on investing in a product that could lose product support in a couple of years. For now...Dune seems like a more sensible investment and definitely prevails over the "K" in any cost vs. benefit analysis I can think of!

if you don't need the K. carrousel, then the perfect replication of a K system for 10% of the price would be a HTPC running MyMovies with WMC + any NAS for storage. Auto rip, database management, iOS/android App,...Everything is in it except that you will need a bit of time to set it up (but using WMC is really more stable than XBMC).

Thanks. Honestly, I've spent the last five years spending WAY too much time tinkering with HTPCs. I've built several, tried all of the applications, invested hundreds of hours trying to dial them in perfectly, etc. However, meeting the wife and kid's acceptance factor was always an issue, especially because it always seemed they would freeze up, not wake from sleep, drop frames, lose audio, etc. when they were using it. I just want a "purpose-built" device that is as stable and reliable as possible and can stay on 24/7 without me feeling guilty that I'm wasting too much electricity.

so, have a look at the dune smart range wink.gif

I've got a Dune TV-303D which decodes to 5.1 PCM just fine (its the same as the Base 3D with a different form factor). Good player so far! The only gripe I've had with it so far is some 3D Bluray's don't play properly (the ones with the right-eye first, like Prometheus). Hopefully that gets fixed with a new firmware.

I also use Dune in bit streaming and LPCM streaming mode (originally the dune's supported LPCM streaming "out of the box" and then later firmwares took it away). Luckily there is an unofficial patch which restores that functionality. Until my favorite brand of processors support the newer HD codecs I am sticking with Dune and the patch. Ironically, the K-scape players do *NOT* support LPCM playback. They play back the rare BD or DVD that has an uncompressed PCM soundtrack but don't convert HD codecs to LPCM.

The Dune TV-303D does not decode DTS-HD MA it only decodes the core DTS track. So OP won't be getting HD audio decoded from DTS and that's the majority of what bluray movies use.

Is there any source where this is confirmed? I read the review on mediasmartserver.net, which seemed to indicate that it does in fact decode HD Audio - not just the core track.
