Have 5 year old Sanyo Z5, how much better are new projectors?

Five years ago I built a home theater in my basement, here are the details:

I have a 110" diagonal SMX acoustically transparent screen with a Sanyo Z5 projector that is 5 years old. I have not been following projector technology closely but if there have been big improvements in the past 5 years, I would look to purchase a new projector.

Would a new projector in the $2,000 to $3,000 range be a big step up from my Sanyo?
The Sanyo is 720p so just jumping to 1080p might make a difference
Most of my viewing is Blu-ray discs

I'd say significant improvements, 3D, blacks, brightness, maybe quieter, longer lamp life hopefully, and the move to 1080p is almost reason enough alone. A good starting place to get reacquainted, http://www.avsforum.com/t/1391476/coderguys-top-projector-picks

It is not difficult to notice the increase in detail and sharpness when you move from 720P to 1080P, especially if you primarily watch blu-rays. Depending on your viewing distance you may perceive a smoother more seamless image because of the increased resolution. Depending on what projector you select the improved black level, especially when watching dark movies will be a big wow factor. In your price range you can afford an entry level JVC like the RS46 which will blow you away compared to the Z5.

It will be a VERY huge and monumental difference coming from an old Sanyo z5. I owned a Z5 a long time ago, almost any new projector (even sub $800) will beat the Sanyo now. Even the $900 Benq w1070 would be a huge step up over the Sanyo z5.

After reading through a few threads, it appears that a new projector would be a big jump over my current Sanyo Z5. After about 3 hours of research I think I have narrowed it down to:
JVC DLA-X35
Sony VPL-HW50ES

I would buy the JVC but they are both excellent projectors and you can't go wrong with either one. The Sony reportedly has a slighly cleaner 3D picture, while the JVC is incrementally better in 2D mode.

I have a completely light controlled room with dark walls and black ceiling which would, from what I read, make the JVC shine. My only reservation is noise, from what I read the JVC make a bit more noise than the Sony. The projector will be mounted directly above the seating, about 3-4' from my head. Any thoughts on noise?
