That would be a Pentile display wink.gif Samsung labels the 60" as 1080p vertical instead of "full 1080p"

Unfortunately my QUEEN has not arrived yet thats why I come here to read the wonderful posts about her, I know someone who doesn't like her, yet he comes here and wants to find flaws in her . even though he says he will not be getting her, but I can feel it deep inside he feels she is a serious alternative to his old king smile.gif after all nobody rules forever.

What in the world could anyone possibly like about the picture at those settings. I would never of imagined the F8500 could look so horrible. The resulting picture was incredibly dull, lacked depth and definition, and the colors looked anything but normal. There is no way on earth that is the way any video production was meant to be viewed. The machines he used may have indicated the picture was correct, but it's plain to see it isn't even close.

Thank goodness I have a really talented calibrator that lives in my area. I'm very confident Buzz will do a great job, he is an exceptional calibrator, but I would be scared to try a random calibrator after testing the cnet settings. I mean...really???

I would not be surprised if CNET INTENTIONALLY used those settings. They want the users to use them for obvious reasons

So right now Samsung should address these two issues in F8500:
1- input Lag
2- the pops in 3D

I just hope they do it soon, so both Gamers and 3D lovers can enjoy the set even more

Couldn't agree more!

This set has almost everything I want in a gamer's display. Great black, great brightness, great response time, great and crisp sharpness...which are all rendered useless because of input lag. I saw an ST60 today too. That one also is a great display. Black is near F8500 level, adequate brightness, and very clean with little dithering noise, I liked it too. It's ALSO useless to me as a gamer's display because of input lag. Is it a blasphemy that I prefered those two over the VT60 which was next to the ST60 as well? Sure it had the best blacks and shadow detail, but certainly not enough to slaughter the ST60 and the F8500. I was expecting it to be dim and it was, with nasty ABLs as well. It's funny because it's actually the VT60 that has great input lag when it's clearly more geared for movies rather than games.

Really?! I thought people were upset that Samsung is using the Pentile technology on the S3 phone. I'm puzzled, and that's for sure. rolleyes.gif

RGB or PenTile – What is the difference?

Before getting into the subject, let’s quickly talk about PenTile and RGB and explain in a few words the two technologies. RGB means “red green blue” and is generally used to refer to the sub-pixel matrix used in a display that sees three individual sub-pixels (one red, one green, one blue) making up a complete pixel. The red, green, and blue sub-pixels exist as vertical bars, each one measuring a third of the width of the full pixel.

In contrast, the PenTile matrix uses five sub-pixels in a different formation. They can act as a part of numerous logical pixels, and they often contain pure white sub-pixels. PenTile displays are perceived as brighter than RGB screens, but many display purists consider them fuzzier and overall inferior to the classic RGB.

Maybe we could ask Ken ROSS to have a talk with the Sammy engineers, being he is going to be at the shootout and I assume there will be someone representing Samsung engineering there.

Is there any other way to check the hours this TV has been used other than going into the service menu?
I'm not sure I want to even access it.

I would rather write down the hours manually.
What are the alternatives?
Press mute,7,3,7,ok and in MRT you will find the hours

Are the brightness pops that many have complained about here only oiccuring when watching hockey?

They don't occur anymore with the new firmware (fw 1103), but owners who did experience the pops it was with hockey, full screen snow scenes or other content which full screen whites are displayed (Progressive Ins. commercials etc)..

odd how yours was reset to std mode. I think you are the only one to report this. I believe others including myself was left unaltered.

I fear that fw1103 will make the picture less brihgt!

It will not make the picture less bright and it will completely eliminate 2D brightness pops. Some of the users are reporting a slight change in the brightness but I honestly think it is our eyes deceiving us.

Well this weekend is going to test the IR on Sky Sports F1 HD and it's infamous red dot that can't be removed from the screen.

It's going to be on the screen for a few hours solid during P1, 2 and 3, Q1, 2 and 3 and the race itself. eek.gif

As far as I know The word has been passed to Robert whose whose contacts are NA (Samsung US) only. They ahve said they will pass the word onto Samsung EU, but there is no ETA and probably wont be (at least posted) on this forum since this is an NA based forum with worldwide membership. IT would be best to keep calling samsung and let them know, the more people that call, the more likely it will be sent out earlier rather than later.

It didn't lower my brightness as far as "I" can see but I imagine if you put a meter on it it may have dropped a tad but in my case I don't see it and believe me I came from a LCD and like it bright, hence the reason I went with the F8500 for plasmas always seemed to dim to my liking..
As I said before the F8500 has so much headroom when it comes to brightness it would have to take a major hit in brightness to get down to all the other plasmas..
After updating to ver. 1103 my brightness settings is still running from 43-47..

I may be mistaken but I fear the lag factor is mostly due to hardware and design, and won't be able to be ironed out in firmware.
I just received an answer-email from Samsung Greece concerning the latest firmware fix for brightness pops. They sent me to the Greek Samsung download site which has the new firmware for us 1004.7

I think its the one that UK already released some days ago, right? I will install it ASAP. They also told me that they are aware of the new USA firmware that was released 2-3 days ago, and the same firmware will come to us europeans too! They told me to wait and soon it will be available!!!

Not sure if its hardware, but I do agree on the input lag not being fixed.

Never did I say it wasn't a contender in some areas, and my purchasing preference (in spite of my reticence when it comes to Samsung) could easily change after today and/or tomorrow (in fact, I think it will be a grueling decision if both the pros and cons of each set are taken into account).
Another update is out....released today in NA 1103.1. This one actually says it fixes brightness popping issues along with the usual" improves picture quality".
Maybe this will fix the 3d popping.....who knows
post #5310 of 11569
^ I think that's the one we have been installing the last few days...(?)
