WOW Ken, Mine also arrived today and yours is arriving today too. Nice coincidence.
I will be waiting for your impression for sure. The wait is worth it.

Soooooo loving it. Don't have the time to write the first impression but let me say the things that worry most of us before any TV arrives:
1- Banding: Not a hint of it. I used all the slides of D-nice and was looking very very close and very hard. Nothing. Can't see anything. smile.gif
2- Buzzing: Nothing. No buzzing at all. I mute the set and put my head on the screen. I'm trying to hear the buzz but cannot hear anything
3- Dead pixels: None, checked with the slides. nothing there.

Right now its on movie mode with contrast at 50 and brightness at 45. I have Planet Earth on now and even with the contrast half way down this TV looks spectacular.

My only problem is that when I switch off the TV and switch it back on it goes back to dynamic mode. Is there any setting I have to change to prevent it from doing so.
I appreciate your help

Nice to hear. When I get my unit I will be checking it very closely.

Seeing people happy makes the waiting more tolerable.

Hi Hali

Check if the F8500 is in "shop mode" or something similar. If i remember correct in this mode, after a given time, tv resets to dinamic mode.

Cheers

If you want a bit of a 'torture test' for the banding, have a look at the sequence in the first episode of Planet Earth with the polar bears. When the camera pans vertically over the snow the bands show up for me. They are not visible in slides.

I must say I'm surprised you don't hear anything at all with your head next to the screen. All plasmas make some noise, surely? I've never seen one that doesn't have a least a hum close up.

Hello everyone.

I have been following this thread as I am looking out for a new Plasma. The Panasonic 50GT50 I owned had very bad IR and false contouring. Panasonic service in India is pathetic, to put it mildly. I waited for months before refund. Having owned the GT50 for 3 months I felt it was all overrated. Sure their blacks are excellent but a disappointment in all other aspects.

Anyway, the F8500 seems impressive from what I read here. I have set my heart, mind and cash almost on this display. Waiting for a full store demo and slight price crash before the purchase.

Congrats to all the owners specially Halimali. I love your avatar. Sridevi is my favorite and her latest was a gem in acting. Not sure if you know about her.

Nice thread except for few posts smile.gif
Hope to join soon as a proud F8500 owner.

Ok figured out the problem. The TV was in store mode. Now it is in Home mode. All is going well.

Some Pics smile.gif Sorry camera is not good but can give slight idea.
The contrast at 50 and still the pic is so punchy

As I said blacks in under bright lights retain their ink. Love that. No wash out

Loving the whites even in warm 2 color mode.

Set Contrast 90. It won't hurt a thing and is about where it should be. Bump Brightness to 48.

Download the AVSHD disc and Patterns manual here to set up the basics properly. - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496

You're probably in the Store mode. Switch to Home. smile.gif

Thank you Cat. Yes it was in Shop mode.
Cat I will guarantee you that you will love this TV. When it comes to brightness, sharpness, clarity and precise images I'm very critical and I have to say that you will love this PQ of this TV too

I finished the first episode and did not notice any banding. maybe I need to concentrate more? can you plz give me the exact minutes to be checked? In the slides I have been starring like a crazy in each color but nothing.
Regarding the buzz I'm not hearing it at all. I can't stick my head behind the TV because it is in a cabinet but I sticked my head on the screen. All four corners, trying to hear what others were complaining about but still nothing. Maybe I'm deaf biggrin.gif

Hello Thomas, Thank you and welcome to this thread.
I can tell you that this TV is completely different than any other plasma. Its hard to say it all but you have to see it to believe it.
Hopefully you will be an owner soon. Samsung have a clear winner in this set.

Contrast 90 will serve you better. IR comes from a continuing static image, not contrast settings with moving video.

Here is a quick primer on what you'll need to do with the disc. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=19645038&postcount=504

And speaking of discs, I recently acquired the Disney WOW disc and am very impressed with some of the sophisticated patterns and with the detailed verbal explanations even more so. It's the best I've seen for the non techie and covers all the bases.

Hali, congrats on the new set. Please to enjoy it. With regards to banding and buzz...don't LOOK for it. If you don't notice it while watching regularly, you have nothing to gain by LOOKING for problems. I can't tell you the amount of times in my life I've had a product I've loved, and then someone mentions a flaw I never noticed, then I can't notice anything else. Just sit back and enjoy your new awesome tv.

I feel your pain Ken. I had to leave for a few days due to a family obligation. I had to leave the tv literally 40 minutes after it was delivered... Kept muttering "stupid family...."

In all seriousness, do a few dead pixels indicate more will develop over time?

Congrats you two, can't wait to hear your thoughts on this beauty..
It just gets better and better the more break in time passes. I have to add don't bail out on the remote, I did at first by using my Harmony One but once you figure out all it can do you'll love it, I don't touch my Harmony One anymore except if I go surround (it has my NAD receiver and Blu-ray commands blended in with the TV & Xfinitity digital box fav commands programmed in)..
Good luck and WELCOME to the club smile.gif

funny you should mention that. One of the worst instances of "not noticing until someone mentioned it" was when I showed a buddy my brand new PSP (years ago obviously), after playing with it for a little while. While handing it back over he says "it's pretty cool man, but how do you deal with those 2 dead pixels?". He then proceeds to show me 2 dead pixels I somehow hadn't noticed. From that point on, the moment I turned the damned thing on, the first place my eyes inevitably went was to those dead pixels.

As to your question, I don't have too much experience with this issue, but I can tell you that my PSP never gained any additional dead pixels after 5 years using it.

As others have said, please don't feel the need to look for issues if you don't see them. But the Planet Earth sequence I was talking about starts at around 4:00 in the first episode and goes for about 5 minutes. To be honest, I just rewatched it and the lines are not very visible even at the worst of times and even when you know what to look for. They're a bit more apparent on some cartoons with lots of solid colours and vertical pans. Ultimately it's nitpicking and not an issue for most content.

As for my buzzing, I think I am just sensitive to it and I also don't think m room acoustics are that great. I listened to it in a dead silent room yesterday and decided that if I tried to return it complaining about a buzz they would probably think I was crazy. It's noticeable to me and a bit distracting because of the frequency but I also have young ears and it's probably not a bother for the majority of people. I was planning to get some acoustic treatment for my room anyway for speakers so I will try putting some behind the TV (which is not wall mounted but is only a few centimetres from a back wall and about 50cm from a small side wall) and see if that makes a difference.

To be clear, I'm very happy with the TV overall and it certainly has fewer distracting issues than any other TV I've had (and much better overall picture quality). Nothing is perfect!

My 60F8500 just got delivered. Starting to open the box and figure out which size bolts I need for my mount.

Couple quick questions- What are the blanking brackets for? And is everyone using the ferrite cores?
I had a Thought about the Buzzing, my feeling/knowledge deduces that 90 plus % of the buzzing seems to happen in the USA. I know of 5 people with d's and e's various sizes here in europe None of them have the buzzing problem. Could it be that it has to do with the NET voltage 117 volt 60hz (USA) compared to 230volt 50hz (EU)??
Are they using the same powersupply for ALL continents i wonder??

Anybody any ideas???

Found out the blanking brackets are to cover the bottom stand holes when wall mounting. So now I'm just wondering if these ferrite cores are being used by owners...

I'm in Australia which is also 230V/50Hz and I've read many reports on Australian forums about buzzing on the E series at least, so I don't think that can be it.

About to mount to my stand using the integrated mount. It came with 8 different sized screws, and I found the right ones, the M8 spec, but it also came with 5 sets of different sized washers. Do I need to use a washer when fastening the TV to the mount? And would it go in between the tv and mount or in between the screw and mount?
