The brightness of the F8500 has got be a real plus for 3D!

Thanks

Try it with the Cell Light at 20.
The ABL is the most restricted when the Cell Light is at 20 max.
The lower the Cell Light the less restriction on the ABL.
Adjust contrast, brightness and gama to compensate for the increased brightness.

Yea, I know the feeling. I really wanted my VT50 to be special...but it just isn't. The F8500 is though : )

ps) I've only had the F8500 a short time and I'm sure there will be some things that are not perfect with it, but the picture quality is so exceptional, I'm just extremely happy with it. People really react when the see the picture...I guess you can call it a "wow factor". It just has shockingly good picture quality...of that, I'm sure!

No waiting here, guess its obvious the 51F8500 is the best 50" out there bar none, especially since there are no high end/flagship 50" LEDs available(not counting 55' in my case because it won't fit in our appliction. 51" is the max we can go)..
That said, I just have to see it for myself before pulling the trigger but finding one is the problem, none of the BB, HH or Sears have them here in my area, thinking roadtrip now.. Just hope to keep the distance under 2 hours..
Ken may I ask where you've viewed it other then VE?? VE would take over 2 hours for me and thats on a good NY day traffic wise.. I'm in northeast PA by the way smile.gif

Ya, I just bought two VT50s last summer (55 and 65) thinking Id be done for a few years. This makes me want to jump off a cliff. I love mt VT50s but I just want them brighter and sharper. And brighter. And a titch of pop. Sometimes I go back to THX day just for that. This really looks to be the holy grail.

Sigh.

Has anyone plugged a darbee up with one yet?

Is the ZT60 going to make it to the shootout in that timeframe?

According to the Panasonic insider yes there will be a ZT60 at the shootout....This has no impact on the actual ship date and when it will arrive in different retailers however......

Got my set up to about 120hrs of break in and have a calibration with Ken Whitcomb scheduled for later this evening. I'll be sure to post the results. Curious to hear if anyone has any experience with the Darbee and if it would be a worthy addition to my calibrated set. Also, do you calibrate then add the Darblet or calibrate with the Darblet already on?

I see the pics of the unit on Big River and the back panel looks smooth and rounded.

How is VESA type wall mounting handled? Does the back panel pop off?

Pinger, on Long Island. I've been to 3 Magnolias here and each had it.

I look forward to the shootout too given what a superb job Robert does with them, but frankly it doesn't influence my buying habits much. The VT50 won last year over the Elite and there's no way I would ever have considered it over the Elite.

So although IMO I expect the ZT60 to edge out the 8500 in black levels but not brightness or sharpness, and frankly probably win the shootout as a result (I'm sure many guys voting there will vote for a panel just based on a result of an MLL that's .0005 over the next panel), it just doesn't impact my buying choice.

Ugh, was thinking based on the reviews here that the ABL had finally been diminished to the point of not being an issue.

From what I saw last night at my local Big Screen Store, I doubt you will even notice ABL kicking in on the F8500.

The only way I could tell ABL was engaging on the F8500 was by comparing it to the F8000 LED sitting next to it.
Take away the LED and I never would have noticed...

Just my 2 cents...

Yeah, if I can just get Samsung to replace or refund for my D7000 I would jump all over this set for sure. I'm still hoping they'll try to make me happy before my warranty is up in a month.

That's exactly what happened to me. My D7000 had a bad bezel. They weren't sure when the bezel was coming in so they offered to upgrade me for $700. Easy decision for me.

I've had a panel replacement in September and just yesterday the main board and logic board were replaced - both for the dreaded fluctuating brightness issue that I managed to fix for a few months each time before it inevitably returns. Now that I've had my two major repairs I hope they will be more reasonable with trying to help me out. I've bought a ton of Samsung products in the past few years but they are ticking me off by refusing to acknowledge that there was a problem with these sets.

I didn't even know you could get a fix for that. I tried the firmware fix and it worked for a few months before returning. I just assumed it was a design flaw and decided to try to live with it. I can tell you this, I haven't noticed the problem at all with the F8500. I did notice the slight flickering that others have mentioned here, but it went away as soon as I adjusted the cell light.

Just keep with it. Ask to speak with the ECR department. I just got me D7000 refund for the full purchase price a few weeks ago. I just bought my 64F8500 today for a great deal from a friend who works at one of the big retailers. Delivery is scheduled for Friday.

Yeah, the "fix" was the firmware update and the problem does return after a certain amount of time. My warranty expires at the end of this month and now that I've had the 2 major repairs to try to "fix" the issue I am ready to fight with them. It was an expensive TV and I shouldn't have friends coming over asking "why is your TV flashing like that?" during movies and tv shows.

I think the point is that it's less of an issue than any other plasma. It's a plasma and as such, ABL will always be there, even if it's less aggressive than others.

For all you guys with a 64", what is your viewing distance?

Cheers

An excellent article on the subject:

For a 64" display at 1080P ideal seating distance is about 8 - 11 feet.

I have a Darby in between an Oppo93 Blu-ray and a Samsung 558000. I love it.

Mr. Darby has said that it does not make any difference: If added before or after. It does not effect calibration

Thinking about swapping my VT50 for the F8500. For all of you former VT50 owners, if you sold your set, where did you advertise, and how much did you get? If this is the wrong thread for this Q, apologies!!
