Id like to know if there is a way to shut off what I call the useless modes: dynamic and relax. Would be great if I didnt have to cycle through them every time I change modes.

I unplugged everything plugged it back in and ...NOTHING... well almost , I would get the Smart Hub logo up for a couple of seconds. After that it seems like the TV would try to turn on by itself!. I wasn't pressing any remotes. So I called Samsung, they had me do the usual, unplug it from the surge protector. It would not turn on. I do not use the TV all that much although yesterday it was on for around 10 hours. So it sits unplugged awaiting a service call. In doing some research I see that Samsung has a past history including a class action lawsuit for TV's failing to turn on. I was hoping to escape that with the flagship.

Anyone else experience this kind of failure so far? mad.gif

OK guys.. I had a new motherboard installed today to fix the failure to power on. I had to resync the remote and re-enter my picture settings. You may want to enjoy your plasma according to the tech that repair it , this is the end of the line. Samsung will no longer produce plasma and concentrate on 4K TV.

YES! I've been getting this with my new Sony STR bn 1040, black screen but I can still hear the audio. Switching ports doesn't do anything. I've got the receiver outputting from BOTH HDMI outputs so I can have one on a game setting and the other for movies. I thought it was the receiver for the longest time, but now I think it's the tv. Anyone else dealing with this?

I believe people said their image got fuzzier after the 1114 FW update. Did anything change when you went to 1115?

I'm still on 1110, by the way. I don't want to risk anything screwing up my picture, settings, or calibration measurements. If you think I can do so safely, please let me know. Thanks!

It appears your 2013 TV set may be somewhat superior to a 2012 set with an Evolution Kit installed: Comparison charts

Sure it is, LED will have an end of the line as well. Hopefully we can get 2-3 solid years left from Samsung with plasma displays..........till OLED drops in price.

I am not 100% sure things were impacted by 1114 ->1115 but it is the only thing I can attribute it to. I turned the set on and all of a sudden it looked like crap, too bright and appeared slightly out of focus, like fuzzy. I have the 64F8500 with 1115. I had not been aware it had updated, so it was the change in the picture that brought my attention to it.

I put in HDE to see if things were out and they were, brightness and contrast too high, I thought the kids might have messed with it, they like it hot, but they were the same. I could not actually get it to stop clipping at the far right and left of the gray scale, so at that point I did a factory reset from the Service Menu. (I had not changed anything in the service menu except turning on Cal-Day and night and the independent settings one)

Then tried just reapplying the settings I had, it looked about the same as before the reset, so I did a by-eye tune up with Disney WOW and HDE Blu-Ray played in WMC from my HTPC. I went to CAL-Day as the first mode to tune and this time I had no issue dialing in gray in HDE's pattern, no clipping. It really looks stunning, best it has ever looked since I have owned it.

90% of our viewing is HD TV recorded on a HTPC used as a big DVR and most of the time in a room lit well enough to read in as someone is almost always doing other things while watching, CAL-Day has been a good base for these conditions and still is.

Not sure if anyone else experienced the same with 1115, or if something just got messed up and fixed by the reset.
Here are my Cal-Day settings that I think look great, and the Gray Scale on Disney WOW and DVD Essentials was the best ever. Values in red were major changes. My base before was on Warm 2, now standard yielded cleaner whites while keeping the blacks deep. Sharpness needed to come off of 0, took it to 6 and it made a nice difference to me.

The real test was when we all sat down last night to watch White Christmas, my wife asked what I did, given the potential length of that list, I had to ask, About what? She said the picture looks wonderful. Not sure if it was the firmware change, the reset, or another tune, but it is better. (BTW - "wonderful" is as good as it gets from her)

Absolutely ZERO crosstalk in 3D for me, plenty bright. Not sure what's up on yours but this panel is well reviewed & always they state the same, no crosstalk at all.

I returned a 60 inch 8000 series today because two of the HDMI ports did not have audio at my house. As luck would have it they work great at Best Buy. This really upset me having spent 2.5 hours with Samsung's phone support and having remote support ask me to reconfigure my audio system after they looked at various screens on the TV. Ports 3 & 4 always worked but 1 & 2 had issues. It seems the solution was to unplug the TV from the wall and place it in the back of my Jeep for four hours in a 20 degree (F). environment... I am thinking about buying an 8500 but I'm not sure about the difference in picture quality vs reliability. They're about the same price and having had problems with the 8000 I was considering the extended warranty. But with this being 20 percent of the cost of the 8500 it's very difficult to justify. I know the postings about extended warranties on this forum but what is the thought about Samsung's products. Do I really need to plan for a failure over the best five years in hopes of best buy giving me a new oled set? This is what the Best Buy rep recommended as a strategy since Samsung appears to be exiting the plasma market. Should I stay with the 8000 series and no warranty knowing its almost as good in PQ and probably less at risk of parts shortages? Or should I just say the H*ll with it and buy a 6000 knowing this is for the exercise room in the basement.

I know I am the one who has to answer this, but just need a forum to guide me on Samsung's history with Plasma quality issues and decide if the PQ is remarkably better than the lower end products since the local store is not a Magnolia store... Right now a Costco 6350 and Square Trade warranty make a lot more sense than an unknown 8500 (probably discontinued in 2014) and $600 extended BB warranty.

I have the same issue with my 1040. I'm 99% sure it's the receiver. Many people have the exact same issue with the 1040, even with other TVs. I never had the problem with my old receiver.

get the 8500 and the squaretrade warranty through Costco

it won't cover burn-in, so just keep that in mind

hi if anyone is wondering about input lag on the 64f8500. ive been playing super mario 3d world for the last week and had no input lag what so ever.also borderlands 2 on pc plays like a dream no lag at all.i think gaming lag has been overly exaggerated or maybe they mean for competitive gamers who play online.

Thanks for this. My SageTV extender wigged out and after that I couldn't get any HDMI device to work on the F8500. Cold rebooting fixed it.

I think you're overexaggerating this a little bit, or you need to jump back on a CRT again when you will almost feel like actions are happening on screen before you press the buttons.

HDMI might have a little more lag than analog and VGA though.

Hello guys,

I just returned my second set.

Game mode and PC modes have a glitch that the screen refreshes wrongly every few minutes.

Youtube "Samsung F8500 Game mode glitch on Wii" as an example someone posted, since I can't yet post links. This happens with XBOX and PS3 as well.

Anyone experiencing this? is there a workaround?

Also can the buzz/hum on the TV be fixed or do I just need to keep replacing the TV until I get one that does not buzz?

- Thanks

I've had no issues with my 360 or ps3. however, both are running through my pioneer receiver, perhaps that's a workaround?

Hello everyone, Ive been waiting to see if the price goes down a little before I buy the 64F8500. Just want to see if I can get a consensus from this forum on a few things. I see some people are having motion issues... Is this really bad? I have a 2010 sam PN638000 Plasma it was the first year they created this auto motion garbage, I have it turned off and love my picture. I want to be able to do that with this TV... Is Football, Hockey and movies smooth on this TV without having to look like a soap opera? Also another reason I am choosing this TV over the VT65 is IR seems to be less of an ISSUE i was just wondering if anyone who had both TV's could confirm  this.... Finally I will be gaming on this BAD boy, just want to see if majority of you are not having problems with this.. Going to be on PS4 and Xbox One mostly battlefield 4 on PS4 at the moment. Just want to make sure the image tearing is not a mainstream issue, also with the recent firmware updates has the LAG on games improved?

I've got a question regarding this TV. I am considering buying this TV at year end here or early January but I have read on the owners thread how the recent firmware updates 1115 and 1116 are screwing up the picture and people are having to do a factory reset. If you buy one of these now that was recently manufactured does it already come with one of the recent firmware's installed? Or does it come with the same factory presets and firmware as the ones manufactured months ago?

Have no idea what firmware is in the tv when you by it new but the firmware problem only happened to a few of us and is easily fixed with a factory reset. Also January 7th (or around that date) Samsung will announce their 2014 models. If they are releasing a new plasma for 2014 I would wait because that set may be even better then this one. If it is im pretty sure you should be able to get it in april or may. With that said though the F8500 is a fantastic tv and the only complaint I have is that there are brightness pops while viewing 3d material.

Yeah i wonder if they can out do themselves. Also wondering if the 2014 evolution kit will be worth buying or not. We shall see.

I hope the evolution kit is worth it.

These are some speculations noted:

I have probably contributed to your concern on the firmware changing the picture with what happened from 1114 to 1115. In hindsight it pretty much seems the issue was actually the update process and not the update itself. While I did end up doing a by eye tune on 1115 after the factory reset, I think given that no one else seems to have had any change to the picture from 1115 it was likely the reset that pushed me into a new tune, and not the contents of 1115. I just got 1116 and see no change and from 1110 where I started through 1114 I had no real issues.

The good news is that this picture now is the best it has ever been, that started at 1115, the factory reset, and by-eye tune and held perfectly on the move to 1116. I think a lot of the improvement came from aging and acclimation, aging of the screen and my acclimation, the picture on my last tv was "softer" than this picture. I also think it is actually good that we are seeing a lively set of firmware releases as it shows they are actively working on things. Perhaps my biggest surprise was seeing them fix a very annoying problem with the "No Signal" error message when switching sources, you still get the message but not it goes away instantly when the picture shows up, before it lingered and you have to use the remote to clear (at least you did if you are as impatient as me). To my eye they also fixed the black popping in 2D.

My understanding is the best shopping time for sets of this ilk is Jan/Feb after CES in LV early Jan, they need to start unloading last years models for the new ones. At this point in the year I would wait until after Christmas unless this is planned as your "big" present.

I agree. Standard mode looks way better now and I notice Black Optimizer is much more effective now also. I can now really see the difference in Dark vs. Bright room.
