Sub woofer volume too low with new RX-A1020

Just got my new Yamaha RX-A1020 2 days ago and I have been playing alot with it trying to make it sound good in my room. I ran YPAO and I get a warning saying that the sub woofer volume is too low (> -10 db). I am feeding the sub via SUB1 and the gain is turned all the way up on the sub and in the OPTIONS settings I have the sub set to +6db. Yet I still get an error that the sub volume is too low. Any other things I can try short of buying a new sub?

Not sure if the error is real as it seems to sound good on movies. I have not updated the firmware yet. Would that affect this problem?

Also, I was told in order to have the A1020 use the YPAO settings, the speakers must be set to SMALL. Yet YPAO itself after the tests sets the front speakers to LARGE. Will this negate using the sub? Should I go into manual audio settings and set the speaker size to SMALL?

This is being written from the point of view of a Denon AVR (just to provide some assistance to you) so the terminology your model uses may be somewhat different. In order to use "bass management" (not YPAO as that is the EQ for both the speakers and sub) the FL/FR speakers must be set to SMALL (or LARGE/LFE+Main)/80Hz in order for the lower bass frequencies to pass to the sub, otherwise, if they are set to LARGE, they cannot pass to the sub (unless set to LFE+Main). After running YPAO, the AVR may set the FL/FR speakers to LARGE simply because the AVR detects they can handle lower frequencies < 50Hz or so; however, you are better served resetting them back to SMALL and/or 80Hz to provide more headroom to the AVR as the sub is generally far more capable (and has its own power amp) to handle the lower frequencies. If the sub is working properly, normally the gain should end up about 1/3 (10 o'clock) for a good 75db calibration. Check the Owner's manual and reset the AVR. Set the sub gain to about 1/3 and run YPAO again.
