(Yet another) Media Closet Venting Thread

Sorry, I've been reading all the other posts but I'm getting more and more confused. I'm starting a new house build in a few weeks and am trying to figure out the best way (at a moderate price, not low ball and not nuts, in the middle) to cool my media closet. It will be in the basement, and I designed it to be 4x4, a door on either side. It will have a lot of equipment, probably too much. 3 desktops (HTPC, mine and my wife's which are set up as stations in areas of the house), Xbox as an extender, receiver, router, modem, probably another couple odds and ends.

So my thinking is a vent in the bottom to let air in, and an exhaust in the top to pull out. Questions would be:
1 - Can anyone recommend a fan size\brand the is extremely quiet (since it would be right under the floor of the main room of the house) and a thermostat that isn't going to cause any spikes or anything clicking on and off?
2 - Is there any kind of intakes with filters to keep dust out?
3 - Should I just vent it to a room? It would be vented into the laundry room but I was worried about it getting too hot in there, and maybe throwing off my normal house temps.
4 - Any way to further soundproof the fan?
5 - Any other suggestions so I do it right the first time? Something better than a plain intake vent? Am I looking at this all wrong?

Thanks for any input, it's really appreciated!

Your fan unit will be located away from the closet so the noise is not near your HT, is that your thinking?

Using some in line controlled duct fan....

I've not done this, hopefully others chime in who did.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I won't have a dedicated HT, the HTPC just routes to the two TVs upstairs (main one above the media closet). I just figured with it up high on the wall in the basement, you'd hear it through the floor above.

Probably the best place to vent the closet is directly into a return air duct for your HVAC assuming you will have a forced air system. When you are cooling your house it will go through the cooling coils, when you are heating the house it will add a few BTUs to the process and when the HVAC is off it will just distribute it throughout all the house. If you vent it outdoors like a bathroom vent, then an equal amount of air will need to be sucked into the house through available sources and that means you have to run your HVAC longer to compensate for the hot/cold air that is introduced into the house.

You can get silent inline fans and control them with an attic fan line voltage thermostat placed in the closet.

Just Google Silent Inline Fans for various sources, don't laugh but some of the best deals are companies catering to the "grow house" cottage industry. Panasonic Whisper fans is a well know brand name. In this case you don't want too much horsepower as forcing a lot of air through a duct can be noisy so think small.

+1 on the Panasonic fans. We do high end remodels and use nothing but.

Thanks again for the tips. Could anyone suggest a Panasonic model? I've been looking and can't even guess which is too small or too big. Also, what would be a good thermostat to go with it that won't cause any flux from the clicking on\off? I'm so lost with the stuff it's probably just easier to tell me what to buy! smile.gif

I've been reading up. Would the Panasonic Whisperline 120 be a good choice? Too big or too small? Just checking before I order. If so, what would be a good thermostat to pair it with?

Thanks. I thought you had to get a specific kind of thermostat to avoid it 'clicking' or surging the power when it kicks on and off. I can't seem to find any info on the sones of the Fantech. Is it quiet?

I would put the fan on a different circuit from any of you electronics.

I don't know the noise level of the Fantech, but by mounting it remotely (outside the sound shell of the room) that issue is not so important. I can tell you it is recommended by BIG and by Erskine Group.

Have you seen this approach: Venting

I actually had looked at that one, but was afraid it would not be enough to cool everything I had crammed in there. Or am I thinking too big going with something like a Panasonic fan?

His two fans come out to 120CFM. I will have 2 EMO amps, Denon AVR (4520), blu-ray, ps3, cable box, media box, router, modem, PC, nas, home automation controller etc. I figure if I don't have enough CFM I can easily add another vent. I can't remember exactly what cheezit73 had in his stack but I'll quote a PM he sent me yesterday about his setup (hope he doesn't mind me quoting him here....)

It seems to be working great. During the winter the fans only run every once and a while. During the summer with the house AC set to about 78 the fans do tend to run almost constantly, however they are nearly silent and don't consume hardly any power. I have it set to keep the temp at 86 or below which it usually is, during the hottest parts of the year it will get up to around 92 if a lot of the equipment is on, I think that is acceptable. I plan to add some more fans to blow across the actual AVR's since I added a third and had to reduce the shelf height a bit. I have a one inch gap under the door, however If I was to do it over I would seal the door completely and put some sort of grill intake on the bottom of the door with am air filter on it to help keep the dust down in the closet.
