Center Channel Design and Matching

Starting to look at center channels for HT use (not music), and had a couple of questions about design and matching to the front L/R.

Some centers are designed with two identical drivers for mid+bass and a single tweeter. Larger centers may have two drivers for bass, one for mid, and a tweeter. Then there's the coaxial designs like Kef's uniQ with a tweeter and mid together, plus two bass drivers. Any advantages/disadvantages to the different center designs?

Also, is there any advantages/disadvantages to the center channel bass/mid drivers not matching in size to the front L/R speakers (I know they should timbre match)? I'm considering getting a center channel with larger drivers than the matching towers for better performance in HT.

I'm still in the process of pulling the trigger on my front 3 speakers for a 3.1 set-up (got a F12 from Rythmik already), and since the system will be used more for HT than music, the type of center channel offered by different companies may sway my decision on which speakers to purchase.

Thanks for the info!

I've been on the forum for a few months now and don't recall the seeing the threads. I'm also incompetent at finding anything useful with the search function. I look again, but got a link?

After you decided which Center design suits you (MB+M/T+MB gets my vote)

There are really only 2 choices.
1) 3 identical front speakers for L/C/R + matching surrounds of the same series (or all 5-7 speakers identical)
2) Center of the same series that was designed for your front L&R + matching surrounds of the same series.

Thanks for the reply. I was clear on matching the series (same speakers for L/C/R won't work for me), but even within the same series there are centers with different size drivers. I was curious if matching bass drivers between the center and tower (tweeters and mids the same in both) is important, or if there is something to be gained by using a center channel with larger bass drivers other than output.

Well, I went with matching drivers... all of them.

JBL L880 L&R
JBL LC2 Center
JBL L820 Surrounds

I have another L880 to swap out the center but have not tried it yet. Have to raise the PJ screen first. I doubt I will detect much difference because the drivers are all the same.

Many will tell you that it's best to have 3 identical speakers for LCR, the center speaker will probably still sound a little different because of positioning.

Matching drivers is also recommended but drivers in a tower and in a small center speaker will not give exactly the same result. Same thing for drivers in a bookshelf speaker and in a M-T-M or other center speaker design. Speaker positioning also...

If you don't buy identical LCR, i would get the best center speaker within the same series of your left and right speakers. I have seen so many people regret buying the cheaper center speaker because it's not keeping up with the rest of the system.

The problem is some speaker manufacturers make good L-R speakers but crappy centers. You need to start by choosing a speaker brand with good center speakers or LCRs. For some speaker manufacturers, the bigger center speakers are just a way to make more money and the design is worst than the smaller ones.
