Exe as a service guides and tutorials

All,

I have lately become interested in running some of my applications on my WHS box as a service. I googled around and found some "how-to's", but so far, I get errors whenever I try to start the services. This seems like a pretty basic thing that folks on this forum might have done before, so I was wondering if anyone else had approached this topic successfully in the past? If so, what did you use as a guide?

You will need some 3rd party tool to help load them as service. A normal exe can't be started as service directly because they lack the proper service startup code. Also keep in mind that any UI that exe displays won't show up anywhere unless you enabled the service to interact with desktop user. What kind of application do you want to use it as a service?

Well, there's a few, but primarily, I'd like to get the windows 7 caller ID server application to start up as a service. I usually have to remote in to the server and start it manually. It's not usually an application that I'd need to interact with.. only to occasionally look at the call logs.

I use AlwaysUp. Works great but it's not free. $50.

Ok. I've been messing around with AlwaysUp for a while now, but I am striking out badly. I cannot seem to get the Windows7 Caller ID PC client application to start correctly. AlwaysUp reports that the application has started and is running, but I do not see an icon for it in the system tray and it does not produce a popup when a call comes in (like it should). The fact that there is no system tray icon also means that I cannot check the call logs. I have tried changing the logon credentials to my own login/password, but still nothing.

What am I missing here?
