Video passthrough DUMB question

Okay, I have a Yamaha RX A3020, a fantastic Panasonic 65 VT-50 and some great Paradigm speakers...
I use the newest TIVO .. The Tivo has one HDMI out....
I just don't understand why I would go HDMI out from the Tivo into the Yamaha... If I do, I need to turn on the Yamaha every time I want to
watch TV correct?

as a workaround I usually go Tivo HDMI directly to the TV... and optical Audio out to the receiver for those times when I want to "listen" to the Tivo via the AVR... I send the Blue ray hdmi to the AVR and an HDMI from the AVR to the TV.

what do you guys usually do to set up your Video... and why is it so important (or not) to pass video through the AVR..

thanks

There's no right or wrong, but sometimes a need or preference or just convenience.

Many prefer to use AVR for upscaling thinking (correctly or otherwise) it does a better job than source or display. Only worth it if the AVR has one of the top video chips (HQV, Marvell, ABT). Not so important if your source is all HD.

Some people prefer to bypass AVR for video because some AVR's video processing cannot be bypassed and degrades PQ.

If your BDP only has one HDMI output you need to connect it to AVR to get dts-HD MA etc. So this is a 'need' issue. Not the case for digital TV box with old DD audio.

If you BDP has two HDMI outputs you can bypass AVR for video. You need to switch both devices.

Or you can still use one HDMI for 'convenience' for switching.

so everyone who goes through the AVR turns on their AVR to watch the news??

Everyone? No. Lots of people? Yes. We do in a system where the video signal doesn't even go through the receiver. And why not? Most shows sound better that way.

Dunno why it's so important to know what everyone else is doing, if what I do works and has good logic and reason. Looks like I wasted my breath ...
