Yeah it's not a minor difference in that regard but most users who are venturing into high end AVR 's probably own an amp as well. Sure there are users who see no need for an amp. I was one of them for over 15 years but once I started buying separates there was NO going back for me.
I still love my 1222-k and have it hooked up to my Master Bedroom Surround Sound setup with a 60" Panny ST60. I'm using a 7 channel Sherbourn amp and Deninitive Technology speakers. I love my Pioneer receivers and swore by them for a long long time. However there is no going back for me now. The UMC-200 like anything else does have its shortcomings but the line level pre-out voltage and sound quality is just superior to the Pioneer. They are both great products especially at $599 whether it is the 1222-k, 1522-k, or SC-63 from newegg but for my $599 I'm buying another UMC-200 since I have extra amps. If you do not have an amp then sure the Pioneer all day long. You can also get the Yamaha -1020 Aventage for good prices now too. Last I looked you can get the Yamaha for ~$600 to $649 and the Yamaha has 2 year warranty and much much better customer support. Pioneer's customer support blows the big one. They suck so bad. Especially if you get a girl named Louanne! She is of no help at all and has an attitude to boot!
I have amps that weigh over a 100# so its also nice to not have a 35# receiver in my rack as well.
