Question about Blu-Ray versions: Which to buy?

After looking for new "reference quality" blu-rays and looking though the PQ Tier thread (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1168342/the-new-pq-tier-thread-for-blu-ray-rankings) a question came up. Hopefully someone can answer this for me. If a blu-ray is considered to be (or near) reference quality in all aspects does this only apply to that specific version? For example I notice some blu-rays get released then re-released a few years later in a "special edition" or "extended edition" and then re-released in a "bundle." Lets say one is released in 2005 then re-released in 2010 in a "collectors edition" or whatever, so is the reference quality version to buy the 2005 release or the 2010 re-release?? Or does the blu-ray disc it self remain "reference quality" no matter how many times it is released? Hope I haven't confused anyone and my question makes sense.

The only example I can think of are the blu-rays that are "bundled" like this (http://www.amazon.com/Action-Collection-Tomorrow-Terminator-Blu-ray/dp/B001U4186K/ref=br_lf_m_1000232811_1_1_img/178-3709440-4880652?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=movies-tv&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1QCQ6C0DWY2WCFC5R7EN&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=477598651&pf_rd_i=1000232811) and so on.

I try and read reviews that provide specific details on PQ, aspect ratio, and source material used for the transfer before making a buying decision.

All blurays are not created equal unfortunately.
You can read numerous accounts of poor transfer, incorrect framing, incorrect aspect ratios... Just to name a few.
There are many forum discussions on any of these topics, which add to the fun when buying a new film on bluray to add to your collection.

Pick a film title you want to check out....google for example:
Dark Knight Rises bluray review
Then simply open up the threads and read the info.
Also: Dark Knight rises bluray customer reviews

Enjoy your search...it can be fun, but also quite troubling.....but interesting.
