The Ads Are Obnoxious!

The latest batch of ads are incredibly obnoxious! Using a tabbed browser, every time I mouse over to click a new tab, it causes whatever ad is in the corner to "activate." Some of them play music, some expand to cover the window. It's really annoying!

Oh well. Rant over.

Just a little bit ago I got hit with a full screen Mazda popup ad that I couldn't get to close. Try as I might by clicking on the stupid pop-up's exit button, it refused to go away. I ultimately had to close the tab on the browser and start over.

STOP THIS **** IMMEDIATELY. It is bad enough they there are snipes on TV, doing that same crap on AVS Forum is uncalled for.

I've had a few popups that have been a little belligerent as well. And why, oh why, are there Maybelline and L'Oreal ads? Is the average AVS member really in their target audience?

Hello J_P_A.

It's surprising that whomever is moderating this thread, has yet to inform you that in order to relieve yourself of having to endure ad popups on this website, it requires that you contribute to the AVS Club membership, therefore earning you the AVS Club Member moniker under your username. Doing so will allow you to deactivate ad popups and believe it or not, doing so in some cases, will result optimized performance when browsing the site. How? Well, it's very interesting. The ad popups seem to require a large amount of CPU usage and quite possibly depletes your available ram causing freezing and at times, crashing. But a minimum donation of $25.00 will more than likely absolve you of such afflictions!

I guess that's the price you have to pay when corporate sponsorship becomes the virtue.rolleyes.gif

I don't use a Windblows PeeCee to view AVS. I'm on a Solaris 10 x86-64 bit PeeCee, and I have plenty of RAM. So that is not an issue.

I very seldom, get popups. Come to think of it, I've only ever gotten the one popup, so I figured it was something new.

I've gotten popups on other sites and they've all gone away when I click on the X, or close, button.

In this particular case, it was a Mazda full page popup that refused to go away. I had to close the AVS tab on my browser and start over because of that crap. That is what I'm bitching about.... the use of popups that do not behave. The popup is bad enough, but to refuse to close is unacceptable.

No doubt, an ad that refuses to close is unacceptable. I will also concur that with an abundance of ram, you will most likely not experience a downgrade in page refreshing speed or freezing. But for those that have 4-6 gigs of ram, and god forbid, still using Windows XP 32 bit, if in the gallery section of the website, and you try to open a photo, a system crash could be in your immediate future. My Macbook Pro has 6 gigs of ram, my other 3 PC's range from 2-6 gigs. All of them and I mean all of them, when on AVSForum.com experience freezing when browsing the site unless I deactivate the advertising. Again, if you are working with 8 gigs of memory and using a Quad core i7 processor, then you may be inoculated from or not effected by the high CPU usage and ram consumption.wink.gif

I and some other members wish AVSForum.com would recognize or at least acknowledge that currently, the programming incorporated in the new format may cause a slow down in performance due to the ads.

My limitation isn't the computer, but the saturated DSL. I can't get fiber where I live. I'm busy downloading a lot of stuff and the poor DSL is choking. So I get slow page loads anyway.

I'm not even sure why I got that full screen Mazda popup. Come to think of it, I've never gotten a full page ad with AVS before this one that came up, and refused to go away.

I have an 8 gig MB Pro, and on multiple occasions I have clicked on photos embedded in someone's post to see the larger version, and I've run out of memory. Initially I thought Safari had just locked up, but taking a closer look at things it turns out it's just writing to the swap file. Which, with my internet ADD is as good as locking up rolleyes.gif This site does seem to use more than its fair share of system resources. Several gig of memory is not uncommon when I've left the browser open for a day or so.

The ads are super annoying at this point. They seem to pop up nearly immediately, take over the browser window and be difficult to close or find the close button. I also hate that they play music when you mouse over them accidentally.

I have the same ad non stop. it's for a shampoo of some sort, and it has an attractive Spanish lady in it. I have no idea what the product is, I don't think the ad is working because I've watched the ad video at least twice and seen the ad non stop for a couple weeks at least and i couldn't even tell you what shampoo it is without looking.

Too much of this kind of nonsense and people will start to leave this forum. I'm not that annoyed yet, but I am annoyed enough to come find a thread to complain in.

On my triple monitor . . . three browsers open using the same site

All I can say is . . .

pleeeeeeeeeeease AVS put Taylor Swift instead of Dyson vacuum cleaner because it is more relevant to the main topics of the forum like Home Theater, computers and electronics. Here is a picture of Taylor in concert and I think Huddler can contact her PR for advertising partnership.

Make sure the video rollover is in 1080p HD!

Amen brother. I came here for that exactly reason. The last few days have been really bad with the pop-up ads and I am getting annoyed.

Since I subscribe to your posts I happened to see this. I really have no idea of what you are talking about or even the complaints in this thread. I realized that I use the AdBlock plugin in my Chrome browser which is probably why I don't get any of these. There are some ads at the thread level at the top right of a thread, but usually I automatically jump to the end of a thread or to my last spot and don't even see those ads. The ads I do see are for speakers which don't seem out of place in the forum.

I've been seeing random complaints over the past 2-3 weeks about full screen ads in various threads, but you're the first AVS Club Member i've seen reporting the ads so i guess we can rule out the idea that it's because people are not club members.

I check AVS from four different PCs - 3 with Windows 7 and one with Windows XP, using Firefox version 17 and 19, (both with no ad blockers) and also using Chrome and i haven't had a single pop-up ad or full screen ad or any other type of ad or pop-up or anomaly.

So Randy, are you saying because you haven't, everyone else that has is hallucinating!?! Oh and by the way, being that you are a "Club Member", is the "Turn off Ad's" box checked in your account settings?! You do have that option. And if it is, your testament is at best disingenuous! I know this because being a club member myself, since checking the box, there are no more ads popping up and my browsing experience on the site is back to normal. By the way, I also have 3 different computers using XP Pro, Vista, Windows 7 and a MacBook using Mountain Lion and before the checking the box, pop ups, freezes and crashes occurred while on AVSForums.com.

Regards,

I don't understand why you're being so adversarial and snarky towards me, and I never implied that anyone is hallucinating so i don't know where the hell you got that from.

I was merely relating my browsing info and how i was not experiencing any of the annoying full-screen ad issues that so many people are complaining about as a data point which may help users or members or non-members or administrators track down the problem. I do not have that box checked and the only ads i see are the regular small ones at the far right of the screen. I haven't gotten a single full-screen ad, and i am not experiencing any slowdowns or hanging or crashing at all and i'm on the forum a lot every single day.

If this info i've given helps others then putting up with your unfriendliness is worth it. Sheesh !

Randy, you're right and I owe you an apology. But in my defense, so often, when there is a problem looming, the status quo is to deny deny deny because the complaint(s) are few in number or deemed an aberration.
Maybe it is only on occasion that the latency occurs and that only a few have been subjected to full page ad pop-ups. And maybe, you haven't moved your curser across one of the ads when it's in it's minimized state which activates the pop-up.(Only speculating) But I assure you, it does happen with certain ads, and when it does, it can disrupt the browser speeds. Again, I should not have been so adversarial in my rebuttal.

I was not logged in to my account so the ads are there. Hopefully AVS and Huddler add more ads so I can benchmark my new six-core i7 workstation. Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider is not enough for me anymore, I need some heavy resource application like this site to really bring my 'puter to its knees.

I just noticed that the ads are actually making a sound when you mouse over biggrin.gif

The kids are having fun with it when you roll the ads for more than 3 seconds it expands to video that occupies the middle of the screen eek.gif

By the way there is usually a 4th ad somewhere that pops out. I don't see it anymore can someone check?

And yes I am still getting Dyson vacuum cleaner dammit! How about some hot babes? I don't mind it expanding on my screen cool.gif

Here's what I see when I'm not logged in (thanks to AdBlockPlus):

The obnoxiousness of the ads and the web design "features" that only web design geeks care about (sidebars, what's new, what's hot, blah blah blah) drove me to block it all. Inserting ads in between posts was the last straw for me, and that was months ago.

I don't mind supporting the forum--I've been a paid member twice, and I used to click on the old banner sponsor ads everytime I needed to buy something from Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cables. But all of these new ads & features are of no use to me and will go straight to the bit bucket.

Yes! the 4th ad came back. By the way do I count the big ad covering the site as the fifth one?

All we need now is getting Dianna Agron for CoverGirl and Naya Rivera for Max Factor wink.gif

That Unfinished Man ad I don't mind so much. I try to click on that one every time I see it. You know, to do my part and all. So I'm not whining about all the ads. Just the obnoxious, and poorly chosen ones. I mean, what demographic do they think is using this site, anyway?

ads that take up the whole screen

Highly annoying. If I want to see a full screen ad, I'll click on it. As it is, if my cursor even comes close, I get a full screen ad for mazda, speed stick, or some other garbage.. I don't care how well Always panti-liners absorb excess moisture (yuck) because I'm on the AVS forums page, not the "show me big annoying ad page".

End rant.

even making an effort to keep my cursor WAY above the field, up by the top toolbar... the L'oreal ad pops up again, and again. Stop cheaping out. It's garbage, Not what I come to this site for.

^but wondering... should I do something about these gray hairs?....^ STOP IT !!! ARGGGHHH

Right after AVS made their (latest) site update I installed Ad Block and never gave it another thought. Recently, I re-installed Windows 8 (from scratch) and I started seeing ad after ad. Related ads I can understand... however animated, video and pop-up ads have me very close to re-installing Ad Block (yet again). It's been a week or more since I re-installed and I still find the ads grabbing my attention more so than the site itself which on the surface might appear like a good thing...

However seeing the NAS I checked out at Tiger Direct flash by hundreds of times makes me not want to visit Tiger Direct again and have stopped me from visiting various threads (more so fun and or entertaining than gaining info ones) as the enjoyment factor isn't there (any longer). I'll either spent less time here or end up installing Ad Block... if the ads were a little lower key I wouldn't do either.

I have to add myself to the list of people annoyed by the recent ads. I'm fine with ads in general and I understand why sites have them. But I always get the roll-over-with-mouse ads that play a loud and annoying chime and sometimes takes over the whole screen if I hold it there long enough (which I have accidentally done on a few occasions). My bookmarks extension in Chrome is on the top right so I always hover over this ad.

AVS... if you could please just remove the rollover ads I'll be happy.
I wont complain about the ones that take up your full screen when hovering over them. But I think all the ads that show products mostly targeting women really don't belong here as this forum is most likely full of men. I am not saying there aren't any women using this forum but face it there would be less use of terms such as "Wife or GF Acceptance Factor" and more of "Husband or BF Acceptance Factor"

I'm not trying to offend anyone but financially it makes more sense to display ads that target the majority not the minority.

+1

I find myself turning down the volume before logging on, and trying to avoid the darn rollerover hover feature.

Not a satisfying experience at all.

Can't I just click on it if I like it? Don't push it down my throat!
