2. If the $10 is a flat fee for HD service, are there additional fees to upgrade 2 receivers from SD to HD? With my cable service, I pay an additional box charge that is the same whether it's an SD box or an HD box. I can't see them charging an additional $10 per receiver as that would seem excessive.
There is no additional monthly
fee for an HD box above the normal monthly charge; ALL receivers past the 1st cost $6, regardless if it's SD or HD, or DVR, non-DVR, or thin-client (used with the Genie DVR) receiver.
As far as the charge to actually upgrade the 2 receivers, it can vary from 0 to $99 a receiver, depending on how good of upgrade "deal" he can get out of D*. If he's under a contract, it's unlikely he'll get them FREE. He will have to call & see what kind of deal they'll give him.
Regardless, DO keep in mind that ANYTIME you upgrade a receiver(s), he's going to have to commit for 2 years of D* service; otherwise, there will be an ETF if he cancels service in that 2 years. (you can avoid this if you buy the receivers outright & own them, but then it's going to cost MORE than $99!)
