4K resolution movies being displayed on 4K projectors in theaters?

With recent and upcoming films being shot in 65MM and 4K digital (RED and Sony), are there 4K masters of these films being made and converted into a DCI-compliant file that is sent to theaters? I was under the assumption that most theaters are still sent 2K files even though they house 4K projectors. I assume 2K files are just being upscaled in the projector for display. If anyone is in the know, please chime in.

There is a list on Sony's professional site of movies that have been released in 4K.

Check that out. I would imagine that even if your theater has 4K projectors that doesn't guarantee that that theater got/gets the 4K version. You'd best call ahead to see if they are showing the 4K version for sure.

If you look closely you'll notice the majority of them were released by Columbia Pictures. I wonder why they've been pushing 4K?

If the movie is mastered in 4K and the theater has 4K capability they will probably get a 4K DCP but not many movies are mastered in 4K. Also not that many theaters have 4K capability, before HFR-Hobbit push for newer servers there weren't many options for a 4K server.

It's possible that a theater with 4K capability gets 2K DCP's because the theater management has been too lazy to inform the studios/distributors that they have 4K systems but I doubt that it's common. The cost difference between making a 2K or a 4K DCP isn't that big.

If a movie is mastered in 4k, it is probably also distributed in 4k (but not always).

4k movies do not get distributed as 2k DCPs, because a DCI server should be able to playback 4k content in 2k, so if a movie is in 4k, it gets distributed as 4k. The same 4k DCP can then be shown at 4k resolution on 4k projectors, or in 2k resolution on 2k projectors. Also, it can be shown at 2k resolution on 4k projectors but noone in their right mind would want to do that (but some still do).

There are currently some 50 or so 4k features. Lots coming in 2013, some archival masters will probably get a 4k release also in the future.

2K versions of 4K movies are often made because they are slightly cheaper but you are correct in that the 4K should work on all DCI equipment.
