I'm new here and have been lurking around on this thread about this STB. It would appear many have made this box a hobby (or perhaps it's made a hobby of you). I was going to foray into PHD-VRX realm, but wasn't ready to drop $200 and thought I'd try this budget box instead, I could always use the hard drive later. And, the offer of a better remote was helpful. I'm always losing them so I figured it made it a better deal, even with all the tribulations listed within this thread.
I've appreciated and actually enjoyed the banter and enthusiasm from you all - and VideoBruce, JJeff, PNG5, and the rest working to get the facts, the details, the results, and the shortcomings out in the open. VB is correct in saying that if one only did a basic "1 with a million zeros" search on this STB, or theyd've found all they needed to know right here. Thanks to you all and please forgive me for not remembering all the contributors' names I didn't mention here.. Input from all of you was read, analyzed, and appreciated.
Now that I have one of these on its way and have decided to make it a new hobby - I have some thoughts / questions. Please, anyone who has feedback (same or different) please chime in...
1. It would seem the new v3 aka v8 FW will not pick up channels UNLESS the pertinent PSIP info is present. It won't even schedule records, because (most likely) it doesn't have enough information, and the new firmware dismisses the channel as a result. Would you agree?
2. On unexplained reboots/power cycles - can anyone confirm this happened with the unit on a UPS? Could it be a simple power glitch? Maybe it's a chip overheating issue? It's been mentioned but not yet verified.
3. All US broadcast stations should at a minimum keep time. GPS lock is the norm. Apparently there are many stations that don't use it, don't care about it, haven't connected it or what I don't know. It's embarrasing. And it's the law. Yet, I guess in China there's no problem in using this same satellite technology that could provide every station in the US the same accuracy. It's not the STB's fault, plain and simple.
4. Cable for now has some clear channels in my area, but the guide is eff'd up and displays info that is 4 hours old on my Sharp. So I can guess this will not be a valid source for recording cable on a scheduled basis? Or at the most, it will have a wrong filename? Does it even used PSIP to generate filenames?
I'll have more to follow when I get the box, but like most of us I'm sure, I have a day job. It seems to have some good potential, and firmware options as well. Sounds like I'm in for some box torture test fun!
