If you are running the current firmware the PAUSE/PLAY button will work correctly with the new remote. Until I downloaded and installed the current version I had the same issue as you, I needed the original remote to pause, now the new remote does it all.

Yes you just missed out on the $5(or before that free) deal iView had going on the new remote. I got 1 free one but forgot about my spare iView so I had to pay $5 for that one, now they are $10 but IMO still well worth it
I always detested the original remote, the new one is worlds better(even though I also don't really care for the PAUSE/PLAY combined button. Never liked it in VCRs and don't really care for it on DVRs either.
Oh about the bugs, I haven't ran across any with the most recent firmware but I think?? others have reported worse QAM operation, I'm only OTA and can't speak to that.
