5.1 Sources on 7.1 Systems?

What do some of you do with 5.1 source material on your high end dedicated processor 7.1 systems? For example if a BluRay has Dolby True in 5.1, the rear channels are dead by default on the disc.

So do you:

1) Just pass it through as is with the rear channels dead?

2) Use processor enhancements such as Lexicon's LOGIC 7 for example?

3) Use some form of mixer in the player or the processor to duplicate the side (surround) channels to the rear?

4) Swap the sides to the rear and leave the side channels off?

5) Something else?

In my system I have a Lexicon MC8 modified for direct 7.1 input. In this mode it just acts as a volume control. The 7.1 from the BluRay is injected into the Lexicon circuitry after the DACs but before the analog level control chips. Actually I run AES/SPDIF 7.1 from a modified BluRay player, same idea JVB uses, and use an external Lucid DAC which is very high quality. But of course I can't then use any of the Lexicon's processing features such as Logic 7 and with these high quality tracks, I'm not sure i would want to anyway.

So I am considering using a small 4x4 AES mixer to swap the side channels to the rear as well as duplicate them to the rear as a user option. You could do this mixing on the analog side as well with a small pro analog mixer.

It's interesting the DTS 5.1 does output 7.1 from the player. I assume they are simply duplicating the sides to the rear within the player but am not sure.

I also realize I am in a small minority using discrete audio for multichannel BluRay. Most people just use HDMI but still, what does the processor do the the 5.1 case?

Comments?

P.S. Player is a Pioneer BDF23

With 5.1 sources, I use L7 or PLIIx to scale the 2 surround channels to 4 surround speakers. Sounds that are more mono-ish (mixed to both surround channels), which would have phantom imaged behind me anyway, are extracted and sent to the speakers behind me. Sounds that are more stereo-ish (mixed to either surround channel) are extracted and sent to the speaker at my left or right side. Been listening that way since getting my DC-1 in the mid-1990s.

A bit OT, but how do you think this would compare with PLxx or L7?

I use PLIIx for everything from 2.0 CD to 5.1 on SACD and Blu-ray.

Cheers,

Interesting, how long has that been out?
