Onkyo TX-SR606 audio setting question

I currently have a 5.1 setup with a 7.1 capable receiver. I have the two rear speakers connected to the 'SURROUND L/R' terminals on the receiver. The sound is all coming from the front L/R and center speakers. I used to have the audio setup so that the sound came from all the speakers. While watching the NCAA Tournament games, I've noticed that there has been some sound coming from the rear speakers, but it's barely audible.

When I had a tech come over to resolve a problem I was having with the receiver, the tech informed me that the proper way for the sound to be is for it to be coming from the front L/R and center speakers. Just wanted to verify if the "right" configuration for cable TV is for the sound to be primarily coming from the front speakers?

Yep, almost all the content comes from the front 3 speakers. You'll get background sounds from the surround speakers. Some audio mixes will give the surround speakers more info than others. I'm watching the NCAA tourney too and barely anything is coming from the surrounds.

The NCAA tourney is broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1. Other cable channels may only be stereo.

You can always adjust the channel levels if you want your surround speakers to be a little louder.

Or you can change your surround mode to multichannel stereo or all channel stereo whatever your receiver mfr calls it.

First things first, have you calibrated your receiver to confirm that all the channels are operating and outputting at the same level? If that's been done, then what you hear (or don't hear) is the result of how the source material is mixed rather than the set up of your equipment.

With most programs, most of the sound will come from the front speakers. Feature films tend to have more sound in the surrounds than other programs. Live TV shows such as the NCAA tournament are mixed to make sure they sound right in stereo. There will be some ambience in the surrounds, but little else.
