Samsung UNXXF6400 Thread - Page 23

I noticed that after upgrading to firmware 1120, I had to re-enter my Netflix account information on all the TVs that were updated.

Now when I switch back from Netflix to the TV view, it does not remember the source I was watching (set top hdmi). It goes back to TV source.

Has anyone else noticed and been able to fix so it goes back to the source that the TV was on before going to Netflix?

Hi all, I just recently purchased a 40" 6400. I'm still playing around with the settings trying to get it dialed in. Like some others have said, I don't much care for Movie mode because of how dim it tends to make things. It's almost like a gray screen or cast comes over the picture in Movie mode. I've tried various settings I've seen posted here including Buzz's settings (I think) from the 8,000 thread. Part of the time I'm also watching DVD and Blue Rays via a laptop connected to HDMI 1. I've played around with naming HDMI to PC also tried Game with Game allowing for more PQ adjustments. I have a couple of questions. Regarding the firmware updates, I updated my TV to 1117.4 as soon as I got it. At some point (I hadn't yet turned of Auto-Update), it updated to 1118 automatically. I've now read that 1120 is out. Where does one look to see the current firmware (1120 in this case) is available? When I pull up my TV on Samsung's web site and go to Support and Downloads, all I see are Upgrade File (USB Type) (Firmware) (Version 1118) and the Upgrade Guide. Is the current firmware revision that is available for the TV to download on its own shown somewhere else? Or, does one simply assume that when a particular firmware revision for the downloadable file (for USB) is available that the file is available for the TV to download automatically as well?

What is the option that causes the picture to dim and brighten up and cause just generally all kinds of nastiness to the picture. I'm thinking it's something to do with the micro-dimming. I believe I've read it's turned off in Movie mode but what other setting effects it or turns it off (if you can)? I must have changed something while messing around and now have this nasty brightening and dimming and tearing of the picture going on.

Finally, I'm sure many people have their TV's connected to a AVR of some sort. My current situation prevents me from doing that. Therefore, I'm currently forced to use the audio coming from the built in speakers. For those that are using only the TV speakers, do you find the onboard speakers rather lacking at times especially when it comes to dialogue? It seems that often in movies (of course all movies are all different) that the dialogue will be very low and often to the point where I'm finding the need to constantly adjust my volume with the remote up and down. It seems I'll adjust it up for dialogue and then the scene will change and they'll be a bunch of action and the sound is now way to loud and I have to quickly dial the sound level back down. I'm sure part of the problem is the rear mounted speakers and the fact that my TV is sitting on the stand and not wall mounted. The TV is on a piece of furniture and as such is about 12"-18" from the wall. I've tried both speaker options under Sound>TV Installation Type for how the TV is mounted (stand vs wall mount) and that hasn't helped. I've also tried (briefly) the various sound options under Sound>Sound Mode (standard, music, movie, clear voice and amplify) but haven't really been happy with any of them. Have many people opted for a Soundbar of some sort. I've also adjust the EQ settings but did that early on and found the EQ doesn't seem to be available at certain times (in certain modes I guess). If so are there any recommendations to some that provide better sound output than the built in speakers? I see on Amazon (where I purchased my TV) where they are offering (through Samsung) a free sound bar with the purchase of certain TVs. Unfortunately, my TV doesn't qualify as it's mostly 7500 and 8000 models.

I'd appreciate any suggestion people might have. Thanks.

^^^

On your middle question regarding the dim to nearly black, it is the micro dimming which Movie mode defeats. Supposedly there is a Brightness setting (55?) above which it doesn't kick in or is much more rare but I've not played with that as I was able to get it dialed in very nicely in Movie.

Re: the comments about Movie mode seeming dim or with a filmy haze, I wonder if you guys have HDMI Black Level set to Normal rather than Low? Generally speaking it should be set to Low.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate it. I thought it was probably the Micro Dimming feature or some combination of features. I'm somewhat frustrated by the fact that you can't access certain features while using certain other modes, features or even inputs.

As far as the darkness or haze on Movie mode being caused by the HDMI Black Level, I just checked it and it is set to LOW. Interestingly enough, it's also grayed out at this point so I can't change it. I'm assuming some other options I've changed has grayed it out. I just checked the other PICTURE MODE(s) and with my current settings, I can't change the HDMI Black Level at all...it's grayed out using Dynamic, Standard, Natural and Movie modes. I'm not sure what would cause HDMI Black Level to be grayed out for all the Picture Modes.

I was going to ask, do you or anyone else have an suggestions for a good calibration disc to use to try to dial in some of the basic settings. I've heard that there are some tools for this in the setup menu on movie discs that have the THX logo as well any or most PIXAR discs. I'll have to look through and see if I can find any of those discs and see what they have. Thanks again.

Is anyone in North America who's comfortable going into the Service Menu willing to tell me what they have Option -> "Type"? Warning that going into the service menu (easy to do with a universal remote: power off - mute - 1 - 8 - 2 - power on) will reset your picture settings so you'll have to record them first and reset them afterwards. Also, do not change this setting - just make note of it.

The first two digits are the size, the third digit either a "D" or "L" depending on the panel type I believe. Wondering if anyone who's comfortable going in to the SM can post whether they have a 65D____ or 65L____ panel type for example? I believe the North American panel type is different that the European models.

Thanks.

@soulrider I think hdmi black level is grayed out if you first set it up with a source like a cable box which usually has only a single choice for color range, which is invariably the Video range of 15-235. If you set it up with a PS3 as the source, which can choose between Video levels and PC levels (0-255) then it's not grayed out and you can change it. Basically you want your sources and displays to work together in this regard. They should all be set the same ideally.

I used both the DVE and Disney Wow Blurays for setup, starting with abuzz' settings from the F8000 thread. Hope this helps.

I didn't have either of those problems. But I did notice that my F7100 got the "new Netflix experience" while the F6400 still has the old one. Not sure if that was tied to 1120 or whether that's just a coincidence and it's pushed out by Netflix, not Samsung.

@ anthonymoody, thanks for the response. I think you might be right in thinking that the source used in the initial setup of the TV could be why the HDMI black level feature is grayed out. This might explain some other menu choice anomalies as well. I hadn't thought of the source at setup effecting certain options like that.

I just upgraded to 1120 on my F6400 and with it came "The new Netflix experience". At first I thought there was something wrong. When I went to load Netflix after the firmware upgrade, it sat on the screen where it loads Netflix for several minutes. I finally backed out of it and tried again. I got the same thing. I then tried loading something else like Amazon Instant Movies which loaded just fine. I went to try loading Netflix again and it again sat there for a couple of minutes loading. I backed out of it and cycled the power on the TV and then tried Netflix again. This time it came up and I had to enter my log-in information again. It came up and told me about the redesign and the "new Netflix experience". So yes, the new Netflix experience does come with 1120.

Indeed it does, and a host of ARC problems.

I did the initial setup on my F7100 with Antenna-Air as the source and I do see the "HDMI black level" feature. But I did the initial setup on my F6400 with a Sat Receiver as the source and no cable or Antenna connected and I do not have the "HDMI black level" feature active on it. (It's greyed out on the F6400)

You can do a full factory reset through the Service Menu. But if you're going in there can you please tell me your Option->Type setting as per my post (#668) - I can't remember now if mine was initially a 65D___ or 65L___. (Don't change yours, I'm just wondering what it should be for the F6400.)

Thanks

Thanks for the information. However, I don't plan on messing with the service menu at this point. As far as I know I can't either as I only have the touchpad remote and to my knowledge no one has posted a way to get into the service menu with that remote. I assume people have been unable to get into the service menu with the touchpad remote due to lack of a "mute" button. I also assume that someone has tried using the "mute" button on the side of the touchpad remote and that it doesn't work for getting into the service menu?

I used a universal remote on it to get in.

Holy cow, after 5 weeks my TV finally was in stock at Visions, can't believe it took so long.

Got the thing mounted onto my wall last night, looks great but haven't had a chance to do much with it yet.

Are these settings: http://reviews.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/samsung-lcd-tv/samsung-f6400-picture-settings.html Still recommended or do people have anything better?

Is the F6400 egdelit or FALD?

Edgelit.

Can anyone confirm with the new netflix ui if you press the info button to see the bitrate, does it show 1080 super hd? I have the old Ui and have never seen it go past 1080 hd but it does on my ps3.

On mine, while watching netflix if I push info it says 1080 HD (with 1120 and the "new netflix experience).

They might have suspended it for the moment, I know a lot of us experienced a problem with ARC and the new Netflix, and Samsung was aware of it.

I apologize in advance for this being so long. I need some help from those that have the F6400. I have a 40" F6400 and I've been having an intermittent issue with the voice control feature. I don't really use it all that often but when I have used it I've run into this issue. When I press the "voice" button to activate the voice control feature, I often get a message that says, "Additional setup is needed before you can use voice interaction. Would you like to proceed to setup? If you proceed the voice recognition function will end automatically. OK or Cancel." At this point sometimes I can continue on and say the voice command and it will work. However, more often than not, I don't get the "speak now" on the screen indicating I should speak my command. I simply get the message about running setup again.

I've run setup several times, answered 'yes' to all the questions in set up that you have to give permission to, updated the firmware, done a factory reset and run setup again (several times) but nothing seems to help. The error message keeps coming back. I emailed Samsung support and they suggested updating the firmware an doing a reset (which I'd done). Yesterday I tried using Samsung's support "Chat" function. The person I got asked me if I had turned the Voice Recognition feature "ON" under Smart Features after running the factory reset. I told them I didn't remember having to turn the feature "ON" but that I would look in the menu to make sure. When I hit Menu and go to Smart Features, I don't have ON or OFF at that point I have three sub menus which are Language, TV Voice and Voice Recognition Tutorial. The support person told me there should be an ON choice under Smart Features to turn the function on. I told them I do not have an ON or OFF option at that point. The support person sent me this link: http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx=426960&modelname=UN40F6400AF&modelcode=UN40F6400AFXZA to show me how to turn the feature on. When I look at this link, the menu options listed do not match what is shown on my TV when I go to Smart Features. Again, under Special Features>Voice Recognition I have 3 sub menus : Language, TV Voice and Voice Recognition Tutorial. I DO have a Motion Control ON under Special Features but it is grayed out since I don't have a camera but I don't have the ON feature listed in the link for Voice Recognition.

The person at Samsung Chat couldn't seem to grasp this concept as all they kept doing was telling me to turn this function on. I would tell them I had no "ON" feature and they would just repeat their request to turn it on. At one point they randomly asked me to press ENTER. I asked them, ENTER where?!?! They didn't respond. It was though they were reading from a set of cue cards and for this problem they got to "tell customer to turn the Voice Recognition function ON in the Special Features>Voice Control menu" and because I couldn't do it they were stuck in an endless loop and didn't know what to say. I can't be sure but I would be willing to bet that English was not their first language either. I got no where. I asked them if it was possible for them to use the Remote Management feature and connect to my TV remotely and look through the menu options and see if I am perhaps somehow missing some menu options or something. They didn't respond at all to my suggestion. I finally had to just give up and tell them, I'm sorry but if all you are going to do is to tell me to choose a menu option I don't have, we aren't going to get very far. I said good bye and disconnected from the chat.

I"ll end up calling support on the phone next I suppose. Before I do I'm wondering if anyone who has a F6400 could take a moment and press the Menu key on the remote and then go down to Special Features and see what it says. See if you have an option to turn Voice Recognition to ON. Especially those people who have already turned the function on already. Do people who have already turned it on have an option to turn it off. And, do people's menu structure match that in the pictures in the link I posted above. I'm thinking if maybe I turned the feature on to begin with and now it just stays on even after the reset. I'm trying to see if the link they sent me is outdated and not accurate or if somehow my TV is somehow missing some menu options I'm supposed to have. Thanks in advance and again, sorry this is so long.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a UN75F6300 and then noticed the 6400. My understanding is the 6400 offers 3D, micro dimming and the slicker remote over the 6300. Is there anything else that might make it better? I'm not really interested in 3D, I've read the micro dimming offers little, if any benefit. The remote does look slick. So I guess my main question is about picture quality. Those extra features aside, how does the picture quality compare between the 6300 and 6400? Are they really the same panel, with one with a few more bells and whistles? Just wondering if the extra grand is worth it. Thanks!
A thousand bucks difference : no way is it worth it.

I only got the 6400 as they were out of stock and sold it to me for the same sale price as the 6300.

Even the simulated 3D is really good but it's just a gimmick. We watched about 10 minutes of the Superbowl in 3D and then switched the 3D effect off.

And the touchpad remote would only be a benefit for web browsing. Personally I ordered a standard Samsung remote from ebay as it's harder and slower doing most things with the touchpad remote.

I have a UN60F6300, UN65F6400, and UN55F7100. The PQ is definitely the nicest on the 7100 but it's probably only worth it if the upgrade costs are minor.

Just my two cents on it.

Anyone know how to fast forward or rewind in the Netflix app using the touchpad remote without going through the "More" pop up? Swiping left or right just seems to do the small skip forward/backward.

Thanks

Yes, in addition to just swiping and swiping and swiping which gets old fast you can also hit the more button so that the virtual remote pops up on the screen. Then, swipe to the side (left twice I think it is on mine) until the virtual remote screen flips to the screen with the colored A, B, C, D at the top. Scroll down to the left or right double arrows (not the ones with the line by them) and click the touchpad on the right arrow to fast forward. It will start stepping ahead in the video at a slow rate. Click the touchpad again and it will go to 2X speed. Click it again and it will go its fastest speed of 3X. When you get to where you want to stop, just click the touchpad again and it will resume playing at that spot. Hope this helps. It took me a bit to figure it out. I got sick of doing the swiping thing as well.

If you tap the touch pad on your remote, you will get the pause, rewind or fast forward option at the bottom of the screen.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth updating the system to the latest version software? I got a screen message to update to version 1120. Am nervous about updating any software on anything, you know (if it's not broke don't fix it). I am currently on ver. 1116.

Firmware update 1120 includes the "new" Netflix interface. It also includes ALOT of ARC issues. If you're not using ARC, have at it! Even if you are using ARC, it still works, it just doesn't reset to the proper inputs, so when exiting Netflix you have to manually configure your TV and Receiver inputs to watch television again.

Not on Netflix. At least I don't. If you're referring to Netflix are you using the latest firmware update 1120 with the "New Netflix Experience"? Perhaps it's different under the older UI. Using the new Netflix UI if you tap the touch pad on the remote it simply pauses the movie and brings up the status bar with the time line of the movie. Pressing the touch pad again resumes the movie. You can also "swipe" right or left to advance or reverse the movie but doing this repeatedly is very slow. Pressing the "More" button and using the fast forward and rewind buttons as I posted above is faster although still a pain.
