Best sound mode for Yamaha RX-V673?

Thread Starter
My husband and I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V673 to go along with our 5.1 Definitive 600 surround sound speakers. We mostly watch DirecTV channels (sports, TV shows), not DVDs or anything like that. What is the best sound mode to leave the receiver on? Straight? Sur Decode? I'm not even sure what all the options do, but they all sound different. Is there a best one to leave it on when just watching regular tv? Thanks so much for the help!

I do not own a Yamaha and cannot help with specific settings. But, for TV viewing, there are two types of audio - Dolby Digital 5.1 on most HD channels and stereo on most SD channels. You'll want to set the receiver to decode DD 5.1 sources. With stereo, I suggest using Pro Logic II, which takes a two channel input and expands it to fairly convincing 5.1. You should be able to configure the input from the TV so that the AVR knows to decode DD 5.1 sources and to apply PLII when the source is stereo. You'll set it up once and never need to worry about it again.

This works good for me. On the remote control go to:

on screen>sound program>SURROUND DECODER>select.

then go to:

option>extended surround>EXTD Surround (Dolby Pllx Music)>select.

This will always give you Dolby Surround Sound for all 2.0, 3.2.1, and 5.1 audio sources.

I hope this helps.
