Gems from the NAB: Quadcopters to NLEs

The annual Consumer Electronics show always has camcorders and cameras that appeal to me. But, it is for "consumer" stuff.

The week the National Association of Broadcasters had their convention in Las Vegas. I found a couple of things that fascinated me, which might not actually take much!

First, a video about a quadcopter with a stabilized mount for a GoPro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEx_ZeEZAqk

Second, I don't know why, but watching the business of Adobe is interesting. The combination of how the sell and what they develop to create their version of market leadership seems unique. For Adobe, the NAB is a big deal because 100,000 people show up that have to use Adobe's or competitor's software all day everyday. At the NAB Adobe made announcements of what is coming. They posted a series of "sneak peak" videos to tease. Particularly interesting to me is the video on SpeedGrade and After Effects. SpeedGrade can quickly change how a video looks and After Effects has "Warp Stabilizer VFX", among other things.

I'm sure there were other companies that announced cool stuff. If you find something, please post it.

I'm a 5,000 hour pilot and I love things that fly.

There was a show on TV called "Harry's Law". The main character was an older lady lawyer. One evening she heard a strange sound in her back yard, saw something she didn't recognize, grabbed her 12 gauge shotgun and shot it down. Turned out she broke the police departments newest crime stopping toy. The went to court and she won. She did not have to pay the fine and the police didn't get to buy a new one. It was fiction, but funny.

Nice !

I want one ... as soon as I sell one of my kidneys. (Is it really $15k for the setup?)
It's amazing how far image stabilization has come.

I had a buddy hook up his phone to a Quadcopter and it actually worked pretty well for a quick aerial view.

In real life she would be charged with discharging a firearm in a neighborhood, and the drone would be equipped with a high-def camera and possibly a taser and maybe even a gun. How soon we will have Reapers with Hellfires flying above us at 25,000 ft? They already fly along Mexican border in Arizona, although not armed (yet).

RobAC, you can buy a ready-to-use drone at Costco for about $700.

The quadcopter with GoPro mount is at B&H for $679. It is the stabilizer that is spendy. In the video they said that a model for smaller camcorder might be available for less.

I think they said the 'small' one is $7500. Mount my $299 LX7 on it and I'm good to go...
